Question about VAT on an imported classic ...

Does anybody know :
- if a car was imported from the US & registered in the UK - so obviously the (5%) VAT was paid at that time - but then subsequently exported to the Netherlands, would VAT be payable again if the car came back to the UK ?

Hi Andy,
I would assume so, since HMRC will only look at the current transaction, ie a classic vehicle being imported from the EU.
Having said that, I'm definitely not an expert in the subject............

Thanks - information in your link seems to confirm Jonathan's thoughts:
"The UK considers vehicles that have been exported for over 12 months permanently exported ... the car will be treated as a fresh import during re-importation"
.

I agree.
But curious to know why Netherlands? Do you have a second home there?

It's a car (not mine) currently for sale in the Netherlands which was previously registered in the UK after importation from the US ...
