Ferrari - The movie

Post by bjmullan »

Went to see the film last week. Didn't know much about it beforehand but really enjoyed it. It’s not an epic covering the life of Ferrari, but is based around one year, 1957, and the relationship between Enzo and his wife and lover play a big part in the film. You can take your partner and they would also enjoy it.

Another aspect of the film is the Mille Migila race and if you want to get into the mood try the following movie I found on YouTube which covers the 1953 race:

I saw it last week and really enjoyed it. Reflecting afterwards I figured that if you understood a bit about the era and of course Ferrari at that time it helped in enjoying and absorbing more of what was presented. Worth watching again

I enjoyed it too. A solid 8/10 for me.

The casting of the rather delightful Penelope Cruz sealed the deal for me although having googled the real Laura Ferrari I can see why he was a philanderer :)

I would agree about Madame Cruz although seeing her walk in character was a bit off-putting

We’ve been working on this title since September.
Dubbing, subtitling and distribution for international release on various platforms.
Sadly the production company was and is beset with financial difficulties: they were going to distribute it theatrically themselves, and in lots of territories.
But had to switch to licensing it territory by territory, result being it won’t be seen on cinema screens in more than a handful of countries, and even there we expect only limited runs.
Instead it’ll reach streaming platforms globally much quicker.
Sky will have it in UK, and Amazon in many European countries.
Last year was incredibly tough for the film and tv industry, a mix of the streamers cutting back massively on their platform launch spends of the previous 2 years, and also the US writers and actors strikes.
The studios are likely to be risk averse and more conservative in the types of projects they green light for a while.
So less chance for petrolhead content perhaps…

There’s some good news though…
At least we have this to look forward to as well this year:

Le Mans 66 / Ford vs Ferrari proved that big name big budget car films can work ($200m+ against a $95m budget), but I guess that was pre pandemic and it was written and directed by some pretty outstanding talents (Jez Butterworth is an early Porsche enthusiast) but Michael Mann is hardly a beginner.

Maybe it’ll go down well early on and get an extended cinema release.

I think that is more than a bit harsh. Enzo was hardly an oil painting himself. He choose to get married. The book I'm reading makes the point that divorce was almost impossible in Italy. It was a male dominated society and wives were just expected to suck up their husband infidelities.

Just before jump off my soapbox did you know that during the 2nd war world wives there also told to take one for the team if their husbands and been unfaithful while away. The returning soldiers had access to a government fund to divorce wives that has strayed while they were away. After all boys will be boys Image

As a happily married man of 30yrs I would never condone such behaviour but it just tickled me somewhat the physical ‘Hollywoodification’..of both Laura and Enzo..

It lead me to google Laura and I was surprised at how little there was online about her as she can across to her credit as quite a formidable character. As you say in world and a profession largely dominated by men.

I would imagine as is usually the case what is available in the written text as opposed to the cinematic realm is a more accurate portrayal.

What is the book out of interest ?
