Tool kit prices

Have you noticed that In the USA, early tool kits are sometimes being advertised for very high prices like $1500 - $2000

I don't get it.

Would you pay that much?

Me, no.
But if some are willing to then that is the price.
Applies to many things, not just car parts I think.
Some just have to have a certain item, and will pay if they can. Or buy repro.

It is crazy but people do spend these amounts. It does make you wonder why they command these prices especially since every car came with one so they cannot be that rare. As some cars were scrapped these toolkits should be in surplus.

In the end I bought a new one from Porsche, which I don’t really like but it does the job (at least I hope it does since I have never used it) and I don’t have to worry about ruining it. The new ones come in a fancy leather and pepita tool roll but doesn’t really suit my car. I was planning on getting something more period made but have never got around to it.

What year are you looking for Ian? I have a few tools, bags etc from 67 through 73 but no complete kits apart from the one I listed above. Unfortunately, I’m so sorry but everything I have is original made in the 60’s and 70’s. However, I have found buying separate items tends to be more costly than finding an original complete correct kit.
You may wish to keep searching for that.

'70. But I'm not in a rush to look for one. Yes, I would prefer an original complete kit rather than buying separate items. Thanks anyway.

The 1970MY toolkit is generally considered to be similar to all those from early 1969- late 1972 with some minor differences between years, clasps on the bag, markings on the tools etc. In fact, it’s not much different to the complete kit I have for sale. The contents have been generally regarded as follows in 1970,

- Phoenix - Porsche 9.5 x 710 fan belt
- Toolbag putty interior clasp fittings with basket weave exterior
- 10,000 volt flat blade
- 10,000 volt phillips
- P208 fan belt short pin key spanner
- 19mm straight end tapered wheel nut spanner
- Pudenz fuse pack
- 21mm Klein spark plug spanner with cheesehead top
- 10mm Allen key for spark plug spanner
- pliers flat one side, raised cutting edge the other side
- 19/22 box end ring spanner
- large script "Drop Forge Steel" spanners- 8/9, 10/11, 12/13, 14/15, 17/19


It’s worth noting that non of the toolkits left the factory inside the car but were shipped to the dealer separately and it was up to the supplying dealer to include a kit during his ‘pdi’. I think this could be a reason why some 911’s ended up with the ‘wrong’ kit especially during MY changeovers as the dealer might well have just picked ‘the kit on the top of the stack’.

What about the spare wheel? Was that also dealer-installed?

That’s hugely useful Mike, especially as I’ve been wondering whether the large font DFS wrenches were correct for a ‘72 for a while now - I need a complete set if you have any?

Nice to hear from you. I hope the build is going well.
The large font DFS spanners are the hardest to find and I’m sorry I don’t have any unfortunately. The rest should be a little easier but it all takes a little time unless you happen to drop on a complete set. I’ll keep an eye out.

Hi Ian

Not sure about the spare but I suspect they would be too large to transport as a bundle of separate items to a dealer. Much easier to pop in the front boot and transport with the car. Several toolkits would be much easier to box up in a single package. Do you think that would make sense?

The spare wheels were installed at the Factory - but they were picked from a different 'pile' than the 4 road wheels, which is why the date code on that wheel is invariably earlier ...

Why would the factory not drop the tool kit in with the spare?
Seems odd to ship a box of tool kits to dealers or the UK distributor than simply putting the kit in the car/
Maybe people stole them 'at the docks' or something...

Presumably the handbook was in the glove box so loose.
