Help cant find correct discs for my 944/ KG Arse.

Post by greg356a »

Any help greatly appreciated.

Trying to find the correct fitting rear brake disc is a nightmare. Using parts that fit together rather than from a know single donor car.

The rear hubs fit the VW 1303 drive shafts early 944 part 477501065 and the calipers are Porsche 1988 944 Turbo S2 Brembo rear calipers, 951.352.421.00 (L) & 951.352.422.00 (R). Calipers fit the hubs correctly.

Tried these rear discs but don't fit:
Part number 92052400 Brake Disc 299x24mm
Part number 95135104103 ABS 15822 - Internal diameter too small 298x28mm

Anyone know what I should be using?

The later rear arms used a wider hub and the disc bell was extended to suit. So the turbo rear discs won’t align with the arm & caliper on the early hub.

There was a one year only version of the turbo rear brakes (‘86) which used a smaller hub so the disc bell is less deep. You have a good chance that disc will fit (299x24). The caliper is apparently 3mm off centre so you need to use 3mm shims & slightly longer bolts.

The boxster S disc is also a similar size but without the offset problem…. But then you need to switch the handbrake shoes to the narrower boxster version.

Thanks Bruce,

Will try to find some dimension online for the 944 1986 turbo disc bell.

The boxster disc idea sounds interesting which year would I be looking for?

It’s the 986 model.

Do double check the sizes etc.
On my beetle, I ended up going a slightly different route using the same rear 944 hub / handbrake mech / caliper mount, with early 944 rear disc and boxster 986 (2.7) rear caliper. Paired that with the matching boxster front caliper with the boxster disc on a hub made from a cut down sebro 5x130 disc. Those are fab brakes and have great bite & pedal feel.

Fantastic, thanks Bruce.

Will look at the boxster brakes in more detail.
