Odometer stopped

Apologies if this has already been covered. The odometer in my MY’87 has stopped working. Speedo is ok. I seem to remember some time ago reading on a 944 forum that there is a gear that breaks? Any info would be handy, obviously I would like to get any parts ready before I pull it.
TIA👍

The gear rarely actually breaks - it is an interference fit on its shaft, and begins to slip. Repair is pretty easy and can be done on the kitchen table – either using a replacement set of gears or, as I did many years ago, simply by roughing up the shaft so the gear didn't slip. Here's a link to a DIY feature which details the procedure and also includes repairs on other gauges:

Hi Keith. From your description it sounds like a one-way gear?

Very fidley job uncrimping and opening the clocks that's on a air cooled 911, I've had a few go in my time and always let Steve do it at JDO instruments.
Only a small gear that goes that's cheap enough but I wouldn't want to damage the clock as replacements are expensive.

My odometer has stopped and I've been wondering what to do. Being fairly ham-fisted at times I didn't fancy following the pelican parts tutorial!
Thanks for the heads up on JDO Instruments

It was only around 3 weeks ago my odometer stopped in the 964, posted it off special delivery and was back in around 3 to 4 days.
Real fast turnaround at JDO.

Noticed a problem on my 964 Speedometer since I fitted it back, odometer/Tripometer all working fine but when driving back in the dark last week I noticed I couldn’t see the speedometer, no backlight, I’ve bought new bulbs thinking it would be rare for 3 to go, fitted the new bulbs and no different.
Asked JDO and they say they don’t touch any of the electrics only the gear replacement in the clock.
Anybody any ideas???

Have you actually got power to the bulbs? Is the dimmer for the dash lights turned right down?

Every other clock is lit up apart from the Speedometer.
As it's just one plug that plugs in the back of the speedo I'm not sure how I check to see there is power to the plug, I'm not great with auto electrics.

The plug only goes in one way, if you've looked at the plug, there's 4 or 5 pins on the top and one pin at the bottom, impossible to get it wrong plus the speedometer works.
I've only lost the back lights.

Checked the voltage across pin 3 and pin 7 and I have voltage that goes up and down when I twist the dimness switch so that eliminates the cars wiring. Has to be the clock so sending it back to JDO to investigate.

Problem was all three bulbs had failed and the LED ones I bought…….want throwing in the bin.
Bought the correct bulbs for JDO he fitted them, bench tested it, returned it and it’s back in the car.
