Installing a gear knob crush washer

getting round to this now. How is it done? Put the crush washer in the gear knob and push the know onto the gear lever?

Is there a knack or is it straightforward?

Thread resurrection: Just swapped the gear knob on the 914 (it kept coming off when trying to shift quickly into first...). I used an aftermarket replacement from Design 911, which comes complete with new crush sleeve, and after much pushing and a few healthy whacks with the palm of my hand, it's firmly in place. It has a non-factory 'semi-matt' finish which feels good and less slippery than the old one. That's all folks...

I failed in mine. The hole in the knob is to big and floppy. Didn't work at all. I do dislike a floppy knob!

I bought one from Roger Bray since Andy recommended this from his experience. No issues with it but it was quite a tight fit. You could try this.

Many years ago competing in my 911 the gear knob came off the stick during a fast/clumsy gear change and then rolled into the pedal box...

I used a good application of black silicon and once set, stayed on for many years.

Oh dear - spoke to soon. First drive of the car with new gear knob and despite it feeling tight and immovable, the knob came off after a few miles and won't go back on as the crush insert is now deformed. So, get out the JB Weld and on with the the old (original) knob... Grrrr.

Could be hard going getting it off in the future?
The silicon sets but not rock hard. With some twisting the bond can be broken, knob removed etc and new afixed.

Must admit I can't think of any instance where I'd want/need to remove the gear knob now it's firmly in place.

Adjusting the linkage? Easier with the rubber cover removed?

No rubber cover. There's only a tiny piece of stitched vinyl at the base (mine used to have a centre console, which I got rid of).

I removed the stock black knob for a Fennlane wooden 917 knob, and moved that wooden knob to 2 aftermarket shifters before going onto the current 915 tower shifter!
