Dunlop Racing L and M sections

Does anyone here have any experience with Dunlop crossply tyres on the public roads? How do they feel? (I've been told 15" dia is road-legal)

What car is it for,i have raced on them,great tyres and a light carcase,have driven on the road and very good.

I’d like to put Dunlop racing tyres on my 2.5 ST as that’s what they were fitted with by the factory in period, but I didn’t realise they were legal in 15” diameter so I may rethink putting Michelin TB15s on it.

It's what I was told. I'd like to see paperwork that says so, if anyone has any?

Those sizes have a different compound to the L and M's (484 instead of 204), so you'll have to double check about their legality.

Dunlops are also available from Vintage tyres.

Supplier should have the paperwork you need to prove road legal.

Apparently the specified compound was 970 for these tyres - would that have been harder or softer than 484 (I’m guessing that’s no longer made though?)

Also, CR82 pattern is only available for the rears with CR65 on the fronts - any comments on this?

Just a personal note, I don't like mixed tread patterns etc on a road car but at 'proper' road speeds why not really, lots of people driving with mixed tyres, but on a Porsche..?
Guess it is a bit of a lottery, you have to do it to find out if correct, but I've never had a road car with mixed tyres.

Porsche never had mixed tyres, just sizes but same make/compound etc.
Could be tricky talking to plod or worse in the case of an incident in the car?

I fitted some Dunlop CR65 racing tyres to my 911R-inspired car briefly - just to see what it felt like (plus because they have such an iconic tread pattern).

I must admit that the car felt very 'nervous' & I wouldn't want to (& didn't) drive any great distance on them.

Admittedly they weren't brand new but I think they need to get quite 'warm' before they develop their real grip so, for road use. they're often far from ideal.

It would also be an expensive 'experiment' only to (probably) find out that you didn't enjoy driving the car on public roads with them fitted ...

Might have to stick with TB15s but put an L-section on the spare just for looks…

Also, last night I found out that road legal tyres carry an ‘E’ mark (ie marked in accordance with
requirements of EEC Regulation 30, 30.1, 30.2 or EC Directive 92/23).
So, I'll check.

Racing tyres are normally designed purely for racing and no compromises are made for road suitability. However due to popular demand and in Dunlop's acknowledgement that many drivers of vintage and classic road legal race cars prefer to drive them to and from events on their racing tyres. Dunlop have carried out a complete test and development program on Dunlop Racing Tyres resulting in "E" marking accreditation on certain vintage and classic Dunlop Racing Tyres. These are the 16" & above Dunlop racing R5, R1, 3-stud & 5-stud pattern Dunlop Racing Tyres.

L and M section Dunlop Racing Tyres unfortunately are NOT road legal.

Do many classic (road/race) cars run 16" and larger wheels?
13" and 15" I would have thought?

I suspect you all know AVON Tyres close the end of this year, certainly no hillclimb tyres from Dec 2023 or a few months before.
