Safety measures for 911sc insulation removal?

Post by Oldskool »

Hi folks I’m deep into a backdate project on my 82 911 SC. I’m gutting the interior for a full respray inside and out. Apart from the bitumen on the floor panels, theres quite a bit of fibrous (loft insulation) type material that is glued to the rear inner wheel arches and back seat and parcel shelf areas. Does anyone know what it actually is and what precautions it would be wise to take when stripping it out. The material is original early 80’s. Many thanks.

That should be bitumen sheeting if original.
Pig to get off without assistance like a hot air gun etc.
Do it in a well ventilated space or outside and you will be fine.
I did mine in 1988 and I'm still here...

.
The thick fibrous sound deadening material is 'horse hair' (actually jute or some other natural fibre) so is non-toxic/non-irritant ...

I suspect it could be quite irritating. Anything that breaks up and can be inhaled should be treated with caution. At the very least I’d be thinking gloves and a dust mask. I might even suggest a half face mask with replaceable dust filters. Having worked with jute on seat restoration etc, the dust is a real pain in the nose/lungs.

Try and get it off in larger intact pieces, when it comes to the scrapey scrapey brush brush, I have the vacuum cleaner in one hand sucking it up and clearing the air. Think about a well ventilated space too.

We weren’t that environmentally/health/safety aware in the 80s, just saying.

But then that’s me, and I don’t always practice what I preach.

Sounds like a mask and wooden/plastic spatula might be your friend here, possibly coupled with a heat gun. Maybe post a picture so that we can advise better, although the advice given probably covers ever eventuality by the looks of it :P
