I post this thread for advice and opinions.
Every year I insure my hillclimb Lola sports Racer with a 'fancy' Porsche 911 drive train in it and pay for cover and also an Agreed Value.
It is insured by Hagerty along with my large twin axle Brian James trailer.

It is the drive train I need some opinions on.

The whole car (not inc trailer) is Agreed value of £25K and has been for 10 years.
A recent scan through items similar to my drive train on Racecarsdirect show a steep in crease in prices for engines and boxes, and this has prompted this thread, just what is my engine and box worth?
There are a few current pictures below, but here are the details:

I could do with thoughts on the value of these two items so to revise the Agreed value if required, I will seek advice on the chassis elsewhere as it is a bit different!

Engine
3.2 base engine, all wearing components 80 miles old.
Forged Carrillo rods and hyper hardware
Forges hi comp pistons
Fennlane super light flywheel, aluminium clutch
Super light epicyclic gear Brize starter motor.
Twin plug heads
Clewett twin plug ignition
GE60 cams and race springs.
PMO 50mm carbs
Custom stainless exhaust manifolds, equal length and repackable aluminium silencers
15 litre dry sump custom made oil tank and lines.
Custom flat fan with alternator
Hydraulic clutch slave cylinder

Cost to build above, £10,000 not inc the base engine.

Rolling road performance 298 bhp @ 6800, engine will run 8000, engine virgin and very tight.
Loosened up now after 40 hill climbs, so about 310 bhp maybe 320.

Gearbox
Magnesium case from my 73T 915
Helix LSD
Low ratio CWP
CWP flipped over for mid engine application, easy to convert to '911' orientation
Custom input shaft with 'loose' first gear
Long 2nd gear
4 speeds, 5th blanked off for hill climb purposes
WEVO gate shift modification
Gearbox build by Mike Bainbridge, WEVO mod by Greatworth Classics
Custom drive shaft flanges for the racing CV joints used on the half shafts.

However, all is now sorted via a hillclimb forum.
Will be interesting to see what Hagerty say.

I have no idea what a 3.2 motor & box in need of a build costs these days as a base point.

Sadly I can't help with a value, but God it looks great!

I reckon to source a motor of similar spec inc gearbox these days will be in excess of £30k.

I think you need to double your agreed value.

Yes, this is why I asked the question initially.

Finding a base 3.2 seems to be around the 3 to 5K mark, I know only too well the cost to convert, but the flat fan and the big PMO carbs just add to the ££££ pile.
I ignore the labour to build, but add that and the bill is silly.

I've had a reminder about the box, and similarly there could be a £10k ticket on that....

If you assume it would sell for the cost of the build then 50K for the AV of the car is about right, but selling it would be far less.

The car would sell broken up and those replacement prices may come into play.

Do you want to show me where you can get a base 3.2 that runs for 3 to 5k?

A few months ago I looked on ebay for Boxster engines and spotted a long block 3.2 (nothing on the engine) for £3K, another complete less DME for 5K

Today?
No chance.
This makes things just worse.
If my current engine went pop then it would be replaced with a Boxster engine with more power for £5K complete

And both of those could have been non-runners

My guess is 10k for a Boggo running 3.2. (Not backed up by any recent research though)

The long block one looked very sorry for itself, but it turned over apparently...

My twin plug 3.2SS engine with 46mm PMO's and some other trick parts cost around 23k to build in 2016 + the original donor engine (4k I think). So you've got to be looking at close to 30k for the engine alone.

At this rate I will be thinking 2 thoughts.
I'll be scared when running to 7500 or 8000 in a frantic hill climb run in case it goes pop.
Such a pop has happened before a few years back when the bottom of a piston dropped off down the cylinder.
£4000 cost to fix, 2000+ spent at Redtek.

Secondly, maybe I should simply sell the running gear and replace it for something far lighter and more athletic, i.e. A stout bike engine and belt drive.
I'll have lots of money left!
Or a Boxster engine and box, 350 BHP for 6000.

The idea of a "value" is a misnomer because its value depends upon the situation of the sale. Let's stay away from pathological cases such as e.g. sold off in a fire sale without a full and accurate description and deal with the every day reasonable range of a well-described item going to an informed buyer.

Ar the bottom end of the scale if you wanted to shift it quickly you'd easily get circa £20k in a 7 day auction on ebay, more if two motivated buyers knew what it was.

At the top end of the scale, if you marketed it well on Porsche and motorsport markets and were willing to wait up to 5 years for a motivated buyer with deep pockets who wanted a drivetrain like that one and didn't want to wait because e.g. their engine blew up and they were leading their championship, then £65k wouldn't surprise me at all.

For insurance purposes, you would be more akin to the latter of these situations so should insure it closer to that figure so you could effortlessly and quickly replace it with something similar.

But if you were willing to spend some time getting everything back together, I think you could get the same or similar parts and build it back up again for as little as £35k. I'm allowing £15k in that for a base 3.2 engine.
