Something I thought I’d mention- circled in the pic is a rectangle of metal welded on to the inner wing. Kind of looks like an odd repair plate, however it’s factory. It blanks off the smugglers box vents that are normal for lhd cars that presumably exist to vent the petrol heater that lived in there. Just an odd quirk for early RHD I thought I’d mention

The heater pipes were also toast as expected, some delays in getting some parts at the moment, so a big thanks to Matt at Karmann Konnection for helping me out with these and lots of other parts I’ve been chasing too.



I’m told that getting these out without damaging anything around them was a really fun job!!



Slotted in place nicely, looking forward to some nice heat billowing through these when I’m thrashing it around our salty winter roads!

On my 73 car, originally LHD there are a small set of louvres where your patch is to vent the 'smuggler's box' where a petrol fueled Espachier (sp) heater was an option on LHD cars. I think the RHD cars, no box, has those vents removed and plated over. STAND TO BE CORRECTED!

I’ll check the inner wing of my rhd 69 tomorrow, see if it’s the same on that. Interesting little quirks!

Parts barn searched, I definitely don’t have any 4 screw horn grilles…! Anybody got any dusty ones they don’t need any more perchance?!!

There are a couple of small rectangular indents where your plate it. I took a couple of pics taken of the inner front wing of my 65 RHD 911.

Wow, thank you Ian, that’s interesting! Your car is quite a bit earlier than mine, so perhaps mine had the wrong inner wing popped in at the factory, then when they realised they should have had the blanked one they just welded a plate on rather than unpick the inner wing? Interesting quirk on mine, I guess it’s a Friday afternoon car

A bit more progress on the tin, long overdue! The A pillar was next in the firing line. It was horrible, pushed in, rusted, and with a bonus piece slotted in from another car that wasn’t even attached!

As luck would have it, Mark has pretty much a fabrication shop in his unit with a lot of tooling, so this wasn’t an issue





Now that issue is resolved, time for another area

Next up it was the rear seat bases which are always peppered after a blast. Slice and dice, fit and splice.





Done bar a bit of finishing. Some more panels have been turning up so it was time to trial fit some sections at the base of the rear window too.



It’s almost starting to resemble a car again!

Today was probably a significant day, it kind of felt like it anyway. The reason being was that it was roof day. A lot of tweaks, straightening and tlc had already gone on ‘under the skin’ so to speak, but today was the day the little car got it’s lid back!





Now the pics below show it only tacked on, Marks process involves a lot of prep and trial fitting at this stage so anything can be corrected if necessary. Kind of an extrapolation of ‘measure twice, cut once’

A good friend of mine in Tewkesbury called Mark Spicer, who runs www.type29.co.uk and has been previously specialising in 1950-1955 VW barndoor transporters (He’s currently doing my 1950 panelvan) so is used to fabrication and getting panels and gaps right. He’s on Instagram as @rustykohlruss but doesn’t post too often, as I’m constantly bugging him for progress

Fab. Mark's work is excellent and he seems a top boy. The Kohlruss is one of the coolest Barndoors I've ever seen.

That's coming along very nicely.
