Bardsleys Do Northern Europe

Post by neilbardsley »

Welcome to 2 weeks of craps photos and poor grammar.

Friday was a long day at my desk just before 7am to cover for our Asia Trader who quit. Left work at 3:40pm to head back to the Midlands. Pack the car. Last minute tyre pressure check. Glad I did as they were 24.5 all around!! Place that replaced the front tyres either misheard me or didn't care. I went with 26.5/31.5 because we are mostly cruising on motorways. Unfortunately, I will not be able to provide Graham with mpg updates. The odometer has stopped work. Speedo is ok. However, without any numbers we got from Kettering to 40k from Bremen on 3/4, maybe less, of a tank of E10. I'm adapting my driving style for this trip. Rather than throwing the car around b roads I'm trying to be as smooth as possible. Keep the engine running if possible. 2:45 hours to Harwich Ferry. Zero issues. Nice chat to 2 couples on the 11pm Ferry. Overnight ferries are strange places with excited Dutch kids playing in the corridor outside our room. Unlike Mrs B I wasn't in the Navy so I struggle to sleep with a background engine noise. I should of had another gin and tonic.

Off the Ferry at 8am. Car started on the first turn. Then 4:50 hours to Bremen. All very flat. Lots, and lots, of green houses. Maybe, blue pills are produced in them too? Trip was uneventful but as when stopped my door didn't want to close. I think the latch mechanism needs a good clean and check. Managed to get it closed and I might be entering from the other side for the rest of the trip. Of course I didn't bring any WD 40!!

Now having a look around BremenImageImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Going to be a good read, though dissapointed about the mpg claims... :)
Lots of reports needed with pics.
Our own Belgium, Germany, France trip coming soon but in the Boxster, so 36 mpg on E10 to beat.

Now the fun begins. Starting off the ferry, to Denmark, the red generator light came on. Quickly checked the fan belt and tried to clean the commutator but no luck.

Will have a proper clean and will charge the battery in the hotel room

Also the drivers door latch isn't working so locking. I'm using the passenger door :)ImageImageImage

Bought some wd40 equivalent and small paint brushes. Had a proper go at cleaning the commutator but no luck. I took the bush off. Checked and cleaned it but no luck. Then I took B+ battery in off the regulator but I was only getting .5 to 2 volts. Sprayed alot of cleaned in and it did flicker up to 4v but not permanently. Then I tried pressing down in the bush with the wooden handle but no change in volts. I think it's more complicated than a dirty commutator.

The car is starting very nicely still but battery recharging in our hotel room.Image

Bardsley's Do Northern Europe

Enjoying this Neil . Love the idea of you clambering over the passenger to get in and out. Don’t buy any WD40. Non voyage and keep pesting.

*Sorry posted that after your new post.

This reminds me of our journey to clm 2008, dynamo stopped charging on the way down to catch the ferry! Turned out to be the insulation on the end of the shaft (behind the pulley wheel) that had destroyed itself, resulting in zero volts across the dynamo. Worth popping the pulley wheel off to inspect perhaps? If it is that you’ll need a replacement dynamo or regular bedroom charging sessions!

Best of luck on your adventures, please keep us updated regularly.

Checked the points this morning and put the charged battery back in. Tested the generator bypassing the regulator but still not working :)

We are now adding City stickers for every place we are visiting so 2 added so far.

Spoke to a 356 specialist in Northern Denmark who has a generator if all goes wrong.

This morning we did a walking tour. Which was needed after last nights very good fish (in the Meal Packing District)

Copenhagen is very pretty and super flat.

We are now sitting down for a tasting meal. In Bremen we filled ourselves with ice cream ImageImageImageImageImageImageImage

Dropped by the Copenhagen Station, featured in The Bridge, on a morning run.

Then 330k to Gothenburg. The car started on the first turn and didn't miss a beat. When we got to Gothenburg the Battery still had 6.2v.

A city with a very difficult feel to Copenhagen. More lived in.

Lunch didn't start well with a very curt (Mrs B would say very rude) Italian waiter. However, the meal was ok.

We had a quick wander around town. Lots of trams.ImageImageImageImageImage
