I have to admit to being a little precious with this car, so it doesn't sit outside in bad weather. This is it's other home in secure underground storage near where I live, normally in one of the carcoons you see on the left, together with many more-illustrious neighbours from Italy and other exotics. Not-so the car next to it, that's my 996 project car just after I acquired it, looking very dull in comparison (but actually drives exceptionally well despite all the negativity around 996's, but this is not the place for talking about that!)

Many of you will probably recognise this place. I took the 993 on a road-trip to the Lake District and on the way back I booked in to see tuning master Wayne aka Chipwizards. Such an interesting chap, great conversation, and learned so much from him, watching him work through the window in his waiting room. Could have talked all day. Car now performs even better, pulls harder and more linear through the rev range.

What never ceases to amaze me is the love this car receives from all walks of life. People waving, coming up to me to chat, filming on their phones as they drive past, etc. Male & female. Young & old. Even people that aren't normally into cars seem fascinated by it. It's great to see how much pleasure it gives to others.

This car also gets used. I had a great day at Millbrook with Colin Hoad at CAT Driver Training, exploring the further limits of the car (and mine) under his careful tuition. Plus a more gentle outing at Brands. Both a lot of fun, although for me this isn't a car for racing. It's a car for the experience and love of driving.

So now we are up to October 2021, and it's back to JAZ for annual servicing and TLC. Last time we spotted some minor corrosion above the engine, so we decided to drop it and take a closer look, and take the opportunity to closely examine everything for long term preventative maintenance whilst the engine was out.

... and as some of you will probably guess, this is where things started to escalate. I'm always trying to resist my perfectionist tendencies, so when I'm asked if whilst we're there I'd like to fix something else, I'm always going to say yes.

Jobs like this are like paining the woodwork in my house. I paint a door white, then the frame looks old & yellow, so I paint that too. Then the skirting boards, then the window frames, until eventually I've painted all the woodwork in the room having only meant to do the door :)

So after a few months of this (plus some delays due to staffing & supply chain issues), I met up with Steve who said: "we are now half-way into a full under body restoration, what do you want to do?". So of course I said: "in that case let's finish it". The car has been fully restored everywhere else, let's complete it and do the bits no one ever looks at.

... and work progressed over the next weeks under Steve's watchful eye & high standards. Replacing anything that needs to be replaced along the way, protecting everything for the future (probably even better than when it left the factory), and putting everything back together.

And finally it's pick up day in July 2022 after almost 10 months at JAZ & the bodyshop, a lot of which was due to supply chain issues as one part was needed, then another, and so on as things went back together. All components were inspected as they went back on the car to make sure they were in optimum condition.

It's also had various other items during this time as preventative maintenance & minor enhancements as recommended by Steve:

- 993 RS fan hub & single belt conversion
- 993 RS engine mounts
- oil thermostat & lines
- lower cam covers
- drive shaft
- plus lots of other minor bits & pieces along the way so everything is now working 100%

This 993 is now better than ever - and I love it :)

So there we are, that's a big update sharing the story of this 993 since I purchased it in May 2020 from long-term DDK member Mike. I want to thank Mike for letting me buy this wonderful car. It's a privilege to own it, and I hope it's being looked after as you would have wished.

Hopefully people like to hear about this car, even though it's not typically the era of car that's of most interest in these forums. In which case I'll continue to share its adventures in my ownership.

Wow, that’s some serious scope creep but you know the car is right now. Car looks lovely.

Where did you get the bodywork done out of curiosity?

Glad to know there's interest in 993's :)

Bodywork was all done through Steve Winter at JAZ along with all other work on this car in my ownership (except a couple of electrical issues which were fixed by an electrical specialist early 2021).

I don't recall where he had the paint done as it was one of his long-term partners and everything went through JAZ, however it was all done under Steve's supervision (you can see him in the photos).

Quite a lot of work!
Serious commitment, and good to see under such a modern 911!

Did you cavity wax all the structure?

Yes it’s been a decent amount of work over the last couple of years. It’s always good to know what’s underneath. All my cars tend to turn into some kind of project. It’s all part of the fun :)

I asked Steve to ensure it has maximum protection for longevity, so it’s had everything he recommends. Don’t know all the details except he said it’s now better protected than when it came from factory.
