The shite ownership cycle
So good friends I'm a bit stuck in a groundhog day type rut.
It seems that I get a car, then have to undertake quite a lot of works which take forever, then get it back and it needs a whole load more stuff.
The whole old 911 journey is punctuated by far bigger times off the road than on.
Current example is doing the engine swap on my T. For COVID and other nonsense it's taken about 2 years. It's done and on wot it's quick. But the rest of the throttle is complete shite.
So it needs an MFI tuning expert and probably a few visits to get it right.
I'm not sure I've got the patience.
Anyone else have this, is it just me or is this the lot of classic cars?

I suspect he will be the go to person for MFI once he gets up to speed with the problem.
Always best to fix it yourself in my opinion - at least you know who to blame when it doesn't work properly

I've no specific complaints about the people doing the work as they are all good people and there are circumstances that always seems to mean it takes ages. I accept all that, I just wanted to have a late night rant that there's always something that seems to be in the way of the fun driving part! I would have a go at the MFI myself, but I don't really have the time and suspect that DIY will be a lot of trial end error, especially the error part Would be fun though.

Apparently, I hear this is about "enjoying the journey". Enjoying the trials, tribulations, disappointments and the costs is not a view I subscribe to. Had plenty of experience of old vehicles over the last 50 odd years that I always look forward to the end result and detest the "journey" to get there. My days of "the journey" are definately over.

Have you tried lambs garage for mfi ? ( I’ve no personal experience )

Graham, the Journey is FAR over-rated in my 55 years of tinkering, but, it is easy to get the +/- balance out of perspective.
I was luck to go to bob Watson in 1993, one day, all done but everything had been done, the whole system was 'as new'.
I think first you have to be sure that is where you start from, the manifold drillings, spindle play and all that, are tip-top let alone the big stuff like pump and injectors and their hard pipes.
I spent ages getting that done following Bob's advice.
You need to find a place that really can tune this system, and as I said before on Engin's thread imho there is a list to call.

You can't put an mfi on the shelf. It's worth more than most 914s.
On the serious note I find that having work done on a car just reveals more issues. I'm happy with the journey now but I used too have sleepless nights over it. I try hard to keep the cars drivable so that the driving v playing time is kept under control

I was sick of this cycle also Graham, so why don't you do what I did?
Spend 6 figures on a classic 911 that has had a ground up nut and bolt full restoration by a 'leading Porsche restorer' to 'like brand new' condition....so you never have to worry or go through all this expensive $hit on any badly bodged crap and can just enjoy using the car...

That's a very good point Jason. I remember when you came to pick up the rover on your way to pick up your new car. I really feel for you.
Being positive, my T has always had superb steering but was a bit soft and had a lot of body roll. So I changed the rear torsion bars and added a rear arb. Which was great. Whilst it was away for the engine swap they put a front arb on as well. The handling is now superb. Completely flat on turn in, delightful light steering still.
Get the MFI sorted and it'll be mega,v maybe!

Try John at Lambs Garage in Clowne if he’s still there.

If Mike Burgess is still doing these, then I'd recommend him - he did a great job on my 911E and it's still happily pulling like a train through the rev range and is happy operating at low revs/slow speeds which it really wasn't before. He wrote the book and he's a nice chap.

I've kind of gone full cycle on this -
Bodywork....... The first 6 months of the project - a little pain - e.g. we would like to chop the front of your car off... hang on a mo I'll be there in 20 mins.. oh balls, yes please chop away. This garage is in my trusted adviser category... two old boys who do Jags and Lancias, we go for beers and play golf every now and then...
Tune time... (see other thread in long hood) ... young chaps, normally E Types and Astons in there... Here's an invoice... Splendid, it however appears that you've not really done the work... OK, we'll get it sorted... Excellent, I'll bring it over.... 10 days pass.... Right I'm coming up..... Work still not done.... Some bits have gone backwards... Why is the fuse holder in the back stuck together with glue and cable ties.... It broke.... Hmmm, I see.... It appears you've also broken the driver's seat cupholder (the one that goes on the rail), what happened.... It broke.... Yes, I can see that.... Is my car tuned.... Nope didn't start that..... I see.... Is it charging.... Yes and no.... Well is it yes or no.... Yes but only if you attach this fuse briefly to excite the dash bulb... Where does that fuse go... Oh in the wiring we added to back fuse box... Don't worry it's temporary..... You reckon.... Right I think I'm off... Why won't my car start... We'll look at that in the morning... Yes good idea...

I digress... I did go through the list and it looked like BS Motorsport were the nearest... Very decent conversation with them... Discussing timings.... Hang on you're coming from St Albans... Yup, JAZ can totally do this and they're ten mins from you... Didn't think it was there thing.... Turns out it is...... Most likely next port of call. So whilst I know very little about MFI at the moment, I fully intend to know a "hellava lot" quite soon, something as critical can't remain this dark an art.... (Plus it's all my own bloody fault - because I really had to have one with MFI )

I'd always thought they were the more modern stuff....
Popped down a few days ago .. Few long hoods, even more 356s and an outlaw that was utterly mind blowing. (They all were but this was a whole other level)
