Irritation #4 on my 73T.
The original clock, 2/73 911 641 701 00 VDO 0004 has never been good, starts, slows down and recently stopped.

It did advance 4 mins the last drive though after being dormant for ages.

Being bored, thought i would have a look at things. There is 12 volts to the clock, and the ground wire is to earth.
Clock out of the car on the bench, 12 volts on, grounded to test battery, nothing, no whirring, no hands movement.

Presume it is done for.
Tried half-hearted to remove the bezel and failed, really tight and dust proof.

Removed the 2 small nuts on the back and the white cover will not come free, but looks like it should?

So:
Any tips to get it into life?
Any tips to send it away to the UK for fixing? (Reep??) If so about how much?
Leave it in the dash as a piece of hole filling decoration.

Favoring the last option.

That's what I'd do.

I can't really remember looking at the clock in any early 911 I've owned (or any other 'old' car I've owned come to that) - can't understand why Porsche still bothered fitting them in the '70's ...

Your solution is admirable in the hot weather but should you wish to fix it then john's thread is probably a good start if only to decide that it is too difficult.

Thanks JB, saw a similar video today but on a classic BMW, same clock (in general).
TBH can't be too bothered to fix it unless it was something easy, but some capacitors leak and loose their spec and the clock fails.

Will leave it alone as decoration and to remind me this is an old car with a grumpy old man trying to drive it.

It's just that it is there, right in my face, and not working, but after 34 years guess I can live with it.

Finished with old motorcycles now and even covered my new nuts-n-bolts over due to dust gathering on them, first time I've needed to do that in my life.

I removed the guts from my clock and fitted a quartz replacement movement like a kitchen clock. I wired the 12v feed via a high value resistor ( 10M ohms perhaps) and made no attempt to drop the voltage to 1.5V. I made the 911 hands fit and it just works and has done for years.

It is of little use as i isolate the car when not in use.

Or failing that, lift your wrist up, and look at your watch?

Very rarely wear one, never have.
Had some hard core safety stuff preached into me when an apprentice, lots of rotating machinery etc.
Don't have a wedding ring either...

I have had two clocks that had stopped working, in both occasions I got the back off, pretty sure that involves getting the bezel off, and I went to the little set of points that resets the spring, and gave the contact faces a clean with some emery paper and Hey Presto they worked

is it a quartz or pre-quartz.

My 72 is the pre quartz type and didnt work. After a bit of research, i discovered that the pre-quartz clocks, inside the workings in the back of the clock, have an electrical connection that behaves like a fuse and requires low temperature soldering to be repaired. Mine had broken so no power getting to the clock although power to the wire as with yours. I resoldered the connection and it worked for about 2 mins.

Am neither a clock person or patient, so i gave up and it is permanently 5.30. But as they say, at least it is correct twice a day.....

I got fancy, and have set the hands to 9-11, eleven past nine.
It will stay this way, the rest of the car is leaning to the state of the clock!

in watch circles, watches are often displayed at 10-10, i dont know why, maybe some of the watch experts can comment on that....

Deemed to look 'happy' I think.

Have you considered rebuilding an engine?
