Engine numbers

Post by pauldvern »

I recently asked Porsche for a COA for my car and they said they no longer do them. They did send me a little info which is interesting and seems to contradict what I thought about the engine number from AFN info I had courtesy of Mike Smith. So I'm wonder which is correct? If Porsche is correct then I have the original engine (at least the 3rd piece).

Any ideas?

Cheers

Paul

Hi Paul,

The COA (or equivalent) is sourced from warranty records. It's conceivable 108492 was fitted with Normal 75285 then on customer request upgraded either by the factory or AFN to Super 83984 and Kardex updated accordingly.

Getting a copy of the Kardex (factory warranty records) may or may not shed light. A few people can get them; search kardex on DDK or see https://forum.porsche356registry.org/vi ... 1&start=75 but they charge quite a lot for scanning an old bit of card...

You can check if all 3 pieces match using the 3 digit case number (photos courtesy of some other website)

Thanks Hugo, that makes a bit more sense. I may have to rejoin the registry to contact Mr Doyle.

Paul, pleased to hear from you again, regarding your question the info I have on the 1959 356A super models I show below. Mine is as you know the same year, the same Super version as yours and my AFN number is 405 only not so far before yours.

1600 Super engine numbers 83146 - 84770

1600 normal engine numbers 72469 - 79999

1959 coupe chassis numbers go from 106175 - 108917

My engine is 83602 and chassis 106954.

Did any of the early info on yours state it was supplied as a 356A Super? The fact that note was entered so early in the 60's does suggest so. Do you have the first buff coloured log book? The engine number is clearly stated in that log book and also the the next supplied white and blue log book that replaced the first buff one also has the number.

Paul,

I looked at my 1959 log book and the later Vehicle Registration Document ( white and blue ) dated 17-6- 88 and it shows the same info as the 1959 one.

Top right of the 1988 one

Private /liight Goods (PLG)
Porsche
3 axle Rigid body
Coupe
Blue
Petrol
Chassis number
Engine number
Registered 22-5-59

Are you certain its not on your earlier one than the 88 version I have?

Bit odd if that info is not on it. DVLA must have the info I reckon lucky I asked for my 59 log book to be returned to me which they did with cancelled all over it !
