My knob came off!

Post by gridgway »

My gearknob came off in my hand! There is nothing to hold the knob on other than electrical tape being wound round the gearstick. I assume this is not the normal method attachment. But on the basis that I don't know what's normal, can anyone advise please? It looks like the gearstick has been cut down to me, but I know nothing!

From about 37 secs

You should have a crush washer that expands and grips as the knob is pushed downwards onto the upright.

Mega, thanks! I'll look for a new crush washer then! I have a nice wooden knob somewhere. Does it need to have the metal tube insert to work? I think it's all wood

.
New crush sleeves are available from the likes of Type 911, Roger Bray, etc...

- alternative names are gear knob 'retainer', 'tolerance ring' etc ...

The trouble with type911 is that a £7.20 part that weighs a few grams costs £7.20 to ship! Hey ho

Try your OPC - you might find it's cheaper to pick one up ...

The old crush tube may be in the old knob

I will check my old knob but it was held on with some electrical tape and was very loose indeed when I removed the tape, so I suspect no crush tube

I have tape on mine too. I would like to get this washer too. However, will the knob come off after this washer has been inserted?
