Hi there,

My car is currently being backdated (pics on the members cars section), and in doing so they had to break the windscreen to get it out (previous owner had bonded the screen in)

As I'm backdating the car I would like to lose the clues to it being an80's car, so what screen should I order, and more to the point, what will fit?

The existing screen has the dark green bit at the top and an inbuilt radio aerial. I believe the early screens would have had neither - but if I go for one of those would they fit? I've heard they changed some of the windscreen fitting mouldings over the years but don't know if they changed the screen itself.

Finally, anyone know where you can get new screens for the older cars?

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated. Forgive me if I'm asking dumb questions.

As far as I kno, all 911 screens are the same size and shape.

Rubbers varied, as did the other things you mentioned.

Screens are readily available for about 100-120 pounds..Peter Jones near Bedford fots them properly for IIRC 110 each...he used to advertise in Porsche Post..

I get my screens form the local fitter in Yellow Pages, about £120 plus VAT fitted and guaranteed. 911 screens are all the same sie from 65 - 89.

A colleague of mine told me that he used to fit heated front screens to 911s at a previous employer. He believes they were first used on the 930, and that only the bottom third of the screen had elements fitted. Does this ring any bells...?

Thanks for that Gary - how is it activated? do you have a hidden switch?

My heated rear screen switch is a two stage pull, it looks original but not certain. I use the first stage for the front screen and the second for front and rear. There is a separate relay and I've made up a basic fused wiring harness running straight off one of the batteries to hook it all up.

It's not as good as the screen in my old Mondeo, but with the so called 'heating' system in old 911s something is better than nothing!

When you say it's not as good as the mondeo one do you mean the actual demisting isn't as good or do you mean you can see the filaments?

It's the actual demisting, maybe it just doesn't get as hot!

The elements are the same level of visibility as the Mondeo. You can see them but you get used to it!

Edit: Just thought; the Mondeo is going to be better as it blows a decent amount of hot air on the screen as well as the heated window, the 911 just farts near the screen and hopes!

I have been fitted heated screens in 911s used for rallying for some time now.

Ricky Evans Motorsport supplied screens with a light green tint.

I have a source of plain screens without a tint but due to production volumes do work out a few pounds more.

You will always need some airflow across a heated screen to acheive demisting as you need to mess about with the dew point.

Our rally car has a couple of low power 12V fans mounted under the dash to just provide a draft and it clears quickly and efficiently.

We have completely removed all the heating system from our car and use simple headers hence the changes.

Both the Ricky Evans MSport and the screens I have use two heating elements in the screen so you can either wire them together or on two switches. As current requirements are high you will need a relay and a decent fuse.
