You could wire the indicator dash lights into the corresponding indicator circuit which works fine, and bypass the 2nd contact circuit in the relay which appears to be failing. I know it’s technically a bodge, but can be both neat and free!

Nothing is 'free' with me and cars...
Have ordered the new relay from Des911, £27 delivered in a few days, unless, like most I buy from them it is on back order and the lead time is 3 months.

I keep getting this thought that the car is flashing Left, light on dash is out, I can't hear the ticking and someone pulls out in front of me as I drive straight ahead on a major road, thinking I was intending to turn left.
Bad scenario.

On start ups today, no noises.

Sweet and innocent:
Wonder if it could drive even better with 6" rims and skinnier tyres on the front?

If I understood correctly, you said both green lights flash for the rh indicator. If so that says to me that the current is returning to earth through the lh dash light - check earths.

rh dash light could be earthed to the gauge body but the gauge body is not earthed to the car.

Or assuming you have no wires crossed or missing in the dash then I would suggest there is a route to earth through the lh dash light, probably in the relay.

I touched nothing on my instruments or relay during the rebuild and went from the 2 flashes then both indicator dash lights on condition to perfect function just by sorting earths.

No show for the new relay from Design911.
"on back order, will ship in 3 weeks time" (tough)

This is the 4th time ordered parts from them only to find not in stock, taken the order, taken the money.
Never used to be the case.

I find it frustrating when they only tell you after you've ordered they're not in stock. I find it does help with design911 when you phone up or email.

Quick scan of the 1972 wiring diagram (assuming the same design).

Power comes from the relay via one wire (blue/white) to the gauge. The dash bulbs have separate routes to earth via each external bulb.

If one dash bulb is working correctly and the other isn’t I’d guess the issue is in the wiring between the gauge and the light unit. Check the wiring diagram to see where to look.

Re item #1, ii had a similar noise on start up in my 3.2 Carrera some time ago. It turned out to be the oil filter. I replaced it with a Mahle one and the noise stopped. Apparently it was to do with the bypass valve inside the filter.

Interesting, this drone came about 18 months ago, about the time of an oil change, and only on cold start.
Used a Mahle filter as always, but i assume it was a real one!

I just discovered these - I saw on 911uk that you clamp them across the wires if you have LED's and they restore the current/resistance to normal. At least on modern cars they resolve problems caused by the different load of LEDs vs incandescent bulbs. I can't vouch for whether they would fix the issue on an older vehicle. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/123335574597

Had another fresh look at these indicator issues. Signal from the relay works on RHS if I take a temporary earth from the indicator/tacho light to ground.
LHS does nothing with indicator switch on right turn.

Do the same on the LHS light and nothing.
Meter on the blue/white from indicator relay to LHS light, no voltage pulse.

Thus, I presume there is no pulse coming from the relay to the LHS light.

Chased-up the delivery from Design911 for my long awaited indicator relay, been nearly a month since ordering it.

They advise there is no stock and I am welcome to pay £13 more for the alternative.

So, they have 2 relays on their site. One is actually not available, the other more expensive one is, any of course they are so wonderful they expect me to pay. They do not say if the expensive one is in stock...
That company is sinking.

Cancelled my relay order on Design911.
Bought another this morning locally, fitted it and no real change, that is it has not fixed this problem.

In the end of fiddling about I've removed the LH arrow bulb and now th RH bulb flashes with the indicators right, and flashses when indcator left.
Thus I have 'indication ' in front of me on the tacho the indicator switch has not neutralised from left or right turn.

Can't be bothered to fuss any more.

Something made me think of this thread this week and your indicator frustrations. While repairing around my battery box I noticed it's brazed at its base to the body, which I guessed is to ensure a good circuit for the wing earth strap which is attached to it. Maybe if that's been repaired (or hasn't) the earth circuit isn't good.

The inner wings have not been touched, all original 1973, both sides Rob.

all other electrics are fine on the car but take your point that the earth strap on the wings take all the car's power back to battery.
Said straps are good and tight/clean.
