Hi Mike

Thanks Mike, it will be interesting for sure. I think the main issue is that by the time you add modern (if you call a 22 year old car modern) safety features and some creature comforts, most cars are 1400kg + and weight is probably the biggest obstacle to a good driving experience. The cars I have enjoyed most invariably weight a lot less and dynamically are so good to drive. Maybe 1400kg is as low as I am going to go without putting the car on a diet or buying something more exotic (budget won't stretch to a Mac F1 sadly). I've been lucky with my 73 car as its a great balance of power / weight but lacks the safety and comfort features I am looking for. Some interesting numbers:

2.7 RS = 975kg
3.2 Carrera = 1160kg
964 C2 = 1350kg
993 C2 = 1390kg
996.1 GT3 = 1350kg
996.2 GT3 = 1380kg

.

Looks like a nice 'touring' car - great for more 'civilised' trips away with your wife.

Incidentally, your stated weight for the 2.7RS is a little light - the homologation cars were quoted as 960 kg, the M471 production models as 975 kg & the M472 models as 1075 kg - still a fair bit lighter than the later models.

Nice car Feroz.

I suppose the fact a 992 GT3 is only 50kg heavier than a 996 GT3 over 20 years later is actually quite impressive....

Thanks Jason. I think it is incredible the weight seems to have stuck at around 1400kgs since the late 80s despite all the extra safety features, comforts and a doubling of power. The performance of the latest GT3s is very impressive, 991 is already too fast and the 992 is a bit more still. I guess that is why people feel it is a relative bargain and they trade at such a premium. Everything else with comparable capabilities (if there is such a thing) is 30% heavier, more expensive etc. Nearest rival is probably a GT4. I had one and it was a great all rounder but not as exciting to drive as a GT3, the engine lacked a little sparkle. If this 996 GT3 doesn't hit the spot, I'll probably get another GT4 (co-incidentally also about 1400kgs).

You got me reading Feroz. :) Surprised that the lightest 996 kettle is the 3.4 C2 at 1320kg.

Yes. Bit of a missed opportunity I think as if they shed 100kg for the for the GT3 (as in most previous sporting 911 variants), would have been an amazing car with 360 bhp and 1300kg. Instead they managed to make it heavier by adding the body kit etc, and no other substantial weight loss.

Great choice. Nothing eats up the miles like my 996 Turbo, although I do find myself hankering for an early 3.4 C2. Crazy that these are 20 year old cars now.

I’ve got a mates very nice early ‘throttle cable’ 996 C2 staying with me at the moment and imho it’s more fun to drive than my old warmed over turbo

Problem these days is finding a nice early 996

That looks nice James. As you say, trouble is these cars are a bit unloved and at 20 years old needing a bit of maintenance. Still feels like 996s are a bit of a bargain compared to 964/993s and later 911s. Proper Porsche motoring for sensible money right throughout the range C2 - GT3.

Indeed. I have looked at several in the past few months but have yet to find the right one. This has just come on sale if you don't mind a sunroof.

Priced well which allows 5k to refresh all the brakes and suspension components which these need around 70k miles.

That looks nice Dave and sensible price, I have seen a couple of decent cars but closer to £20k. I nearly bought one that had KW suspension and a few nice mods plus really nice condition. Thought I could ditch most of the interior and save some weight and it would be a fun car.

When I catch myself thinking "that would make a good, cheap hot rod / track car" about a 996, I think of all the early 911E and S people like me are now changing back to stock!

Possibly my favourite 911 to drive. I think they’ll prove a fine investment even from a slightly higher start point than a few years back. Remember when a 964 or 993 RS was £70k? They’re not now. And a Mk1 has the rarity / performance / homolgation / superb drive combo that counts.
