Sports (rather than racing) 2-in, 2-out, no heat, exhaust?
I've been looking at the Dansk exhausts and spoken to Billy Bean and others of their experiences with the Dansk 2-in, 2-out 70mm racing muffler and I understand its really loud, principally because its virtually straight through and you might as well put some megaphones - and ear defenders - on!
https://www.jpgroupclassic.com/product/ ... el=911/930
What I would like, whether off-the-shelf, or bespoke, is something that looks like this exhaust system with the twin outlets positioned below where the overriders would have gone (but obviously not present on an aluminium rear panel), but be not so loud that I can't hear myself think above 5,000 rpm, and end up not driving the thing.
It therefore needs to have some baffling and silencing material within the box but still have a good, sporty, sound. I don't want a three-outlet type where you can block off the twin outlets whilst on the road and then remove the caps at a track day or whatever because I don't like the look of that so much.
What I had found via Gib Bosworth's '72 LY S/T thread on ESR was the Eisenmann muffler for 1,080 EUR which looks good, but it's in stainless, rather than mild steel, albeit painted grey and I prefer the sound mild steel gives over stainless. I don't know how loud this is either and wondered if anyone had any experience of it, or alternative suggestions for my S/T please?
Obviously I don't want to lose any of the target 270 horsepower on account of the exhaust system, and maintaining some back pressure is therefore important, so smaller diameter header pipes might also be a consideration (no heat exchangers), and wondered if anyone had any views on this as well please?

Hi Matt,
Alternative suggestion:
SCART en France.
https://scart.com/en/porsche/911-1963-1973/51
They have a couple of videos which give an idea.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... 2BLBu9xcrv
For my 2.2S I had them make a slightly custom version of their "Super Sound" muffler, with the tailpipes below the overriders per your requirement. I was going to get it painted but Martin at SCART suggested I try a bead-blasted finish instead, which looks OK to me and will not degrade over time (but I might still get it painted one day). Still stainless though, so might not suit your needs.
Verdict: probably a bit loud for my tastes, but suits my ostentatious car and is nowhere near as loud as megaphones. Pretty OK if you fancy a quiet life today - just keep the revs down. Doesn't drone badly on motorways. Good quality product, but not cheap.
Here's a pic. Yes, I know it's wonky, this was first test run after I had bunged it on. Tweaked since this photo was taken!
Couple more pics here. BTW the similar one on the blue car was, I believe, hand crafted by modifying a standard muffler, which is another option.

Cheers, Richard.

Hi Matt,
these exhausts are a bit of a lottery. Luckily for me the Dansk R muffler i had in mind for my ST hit the rear valance as we were installing the engine, too loud anyway... I then purchased what i was told was a Dansk RSR muffler which sat below the rear valance. I think it sounds wonderful, struck lucky.
You are welcome to a thrash around the lanes next time i am up your way to see if you like the sound.

Thanks Richard. I can’t see which muffler the Super Sound one is with twin 70mm outlets below the overrider positions?inaglasshouse wrote:Hi Matt,

In the meantime I’ve found an English version of the Eisenmann website (it seems that Crest Automotive Tuning are the UK distributors) and the ‘Gib’ muffler is available in a ‘78 dB ‘Sport’ version which I reckon would be acceptable for fast road use:
http://www.eisenmann.co.uk/Eisenmann-Ex ... ct_id=1297
- I will get in contact with Crest Automotive tomorrow and try and get some more technical data on the sound, whether there is any loss of horsepower and suitable headers etc. The only remaining issue is that it is stainless not mild steel, but that maybe a minor compromise if the noise level is okay.

Yes lottery’s about right it would seem!
I’ve had a look through the Dansk catalogue today and can’t see the RSR muffler anywhere - do you have a link at all please?
Would certainly like to have a run in yours next time you’re over here!

I think that variant is mentioned under the main product page for the "Super Sound"
https://scart.com/en/porsche/911-1963-1 ... ound/73-51
(But I just emailed them a spec, and they did something slightly custom. They make them in-house)

Is it this one but modified to omit the 60mm dia side outlet?

Matt, it wasn't modified. I see the stainless version but not the mild steel. ? Maybe it's discontinued.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Turbo Thomas in Redditch who makes mufflers to your requirements, even noise requirements

Re: Sports (rather than racing) 2-in, 2-out, no heat, exhaus
I have at TT RSR style on my backdated 3.2. so it's 1 in 2 out. But the mufflers are available for whatever your application requires. TT/Rich also has his own headers with heat to suit '2 in' applications.
It's all stainless though. Obviously its louder than standard but not obnoxious and easily bearable on longer distances.

I suppose the only downside to TT is they don’t look ‘stock’ period if that’s important to you
