Wow, the engine looks awesome.

Thanks!

A few more bits to do (original racing oil filter, fuel lines, HT leads, rest of the shroud and tinware, MFI belt, centre feed cam oil hoses and general fettling and fiddling) and then it will be ready for Greatworth’s new dyno…

Also, having studied these pictures I received from Michael Keyser during his factory visit in December ‘71, we’ve been able to establish that the fan strap and spark plug holders should be black, not passivated.

We’ve also noted that the centre feed lube hoses to the chain housing covers should be black Cohline, not grey (flecked) braided as sourced from
Tech9 a while ago (which may have been fitted to Solex engines in 2.0l SWBs - same part number however)…

And here’s some more interesting ST trivia:

Matt Blast of Eurometrix in the States who refurbished my original 5R throttle bodies owns the very first 2.5 ST built by the factory (0495), delivered in Light Yellow (one of 6 in that colour) and is currently restoring it back to original specification (it was a rally car and competed in the Acropolis Rally and a few other rallies in Greece and Turkey in 1972 before being sold to Vasek Polak.

The vast majority of the car has never been touched or modified since Polak acquired it, although it did gain a ducktail and a fibreglass bonnet and was later resprayed in his trademark white. It then sat unused in his showroom next to various 917/10s etc (Vasek was going to do the Carrera Panamerica in it but fell ill and was unable to do so):

Matt has shared a huge amount of information with me about his car, including most recently about the original megaphone exhausts awaiting repainting in VHT light grey and which I have never seen anywhere else before. They are completely different to the RSR megaphones and bracket and indeed unlike any repro ones available today:

They are also identical to those fitted to the engine Michael Keyser and Franz Blam inspected with Jurgen Barth (notice no bracket hanger around the megaphone):

So more truth and evidence about these most misunderstood of Porsche race cars!

Impressive detective work Matt. Looks like I will have to get my spark plug cap holders painted black! I note that the period picture of the engine shows plain lower valve covers whilst your engine has ribbed covers. Any reason for that bearing in mind that you are striving for authenticity?

Hi Kirk

I know, that’s been puzzling me too because the Nov’71 Competition Spare Parts list includes “901.105.116.05 Cover for camshaft housing below” and when I Googled the part number it came up with the finned ones which already had the holes for the twin-plugging so could only assume that was correct as the parts list is one of my key reference documents.

News just in!!

A couple of chance conversations at Essen has produced an unrestored early 8x15” Fuchs (3/71 - same as my 9’s) for €960 and some new ‘67 soft window targa black vinyl headlining with unique perforation pattern which was correct for 2.5 ST so a very successful trip!!

Those look mint Matt. I'm surprised there are no belt/harness hoops. Did these just pass over the sides of the chair?

Yes they did - there was a later Recaro bucket that had belt holes but not Scheels.

So not much more progress to report other than some more high quality / correct parts sourced.

Having bought a set of fibreglass ST arches front and rear (NOS and unbelievably rare) from Russell Edmonds last year, I subsequently discovered through my painstaking research for the M491 2.5 ST that the arches were steel, not fibreglass, at both front and rear (in fact the only lightweight parts were the production front bumper (as fitted to the first 385 911 S completed prior to December 1971) and the aluminium rear lid - even the glass was standard Sekurit, as per the 1972 Appendix J Regulations). So those are surplus to requirements now and available here:

This image cropped from Hugh Hodges’ excellent article on the ST in issue 019 of 000 Magazine shows them along with a fibreglass bumper and front and rear wing extensions:

These are pressed thin steel ST arches from Marcel Tromp of Longhoods.nl, European distributor for Restoration Design Parts and a self-confessed ST arches geek (I like that a lot!!). However they aren’t from RD, they’re much, much better in terms of quality of finish, weight, shape and profile (identical to the NOS factory fibreglass arches in every dimension in fact) so this is what we will be fitting to the shell next along with:
-‘72 ST spec strut brace (different to the RSR’s) to be fabricated by Greatworth;
- NOS dead pedal;
- Carpoint safety bar (or Sturzbügel) and crow’s feet welding plates;
- AASE chassis strengthening plates;
- AASE twin coil mounting plate;
- Oil breather tank rubber retaining strap mounts in engine to be fabricated by Greatworth;
- NOS parcel shelf harness mounts.

We’ll then prime the car and start first assembly - hopefully all later this year when I’ve got through my ongoing divorce settlement.

I also have a set of Chesterton Coachwork’s steel arches front and rear (English Wheel hand-rolled), which I bought early on. These are also unused but welding-primed and are available now (I will put a For Sale post up shortly on that thread):

Porsche still make these today but you’ve gotta love an NOS one!

We’ll get one made up with identical lettering dimensions and spacing for the left side too (unless I can find another NOS one!)
