Yes, Sam is doing a fantastic job - the crankcases are a work of art and I just love his operating-theatre style engine room. No dirt, grime or rubbish to be seen anywhere. Plus he’s a really lovely bloke, really enthusiastic and interested in the project.

I also have to say that Angus and all his brilliant team really make you feel part of of the team, and not just a customer - they actively encourage you to spend time in the workshop and really appreciate interest in what they are doing.

However I think they are rather bemused by all the endless packages which keep arriving for me c/o Greatworth Classics!!

Ex-2.3 ST ‘trim delete’ aluminium rear lid in remarkably good condition - usually these are almost unusable particularly around the lock area.

The fact it’s in Conda Green, my second favourite colour after Tangerine is an added bonus.

I did ask what ST it came off but unfortunately the German seller didn’t know - he bought it at a swapmeet a few years ago. However I’m still delighted to have found another unicorn part for my car.

Some progress to report at last!

The shell is back on the rotisserie and ready for sound-deadening and underseal removal using Angus’s proposed experimental dry ice & isopropyl alcohol mix, which if all goes to plan, should be done in half the time of usual methods. Then we’ll be onto blasting what is an exceptionally good shell, which Barry Carter told Angus didn’t warrant Envirostrip’s oven-bake > acid-dip > rinse > e-coat process.

Hoping I’ll have some photos of Angus’s experiment to remove the sound proofing and schutz with a dry ice and isopropyl alcohol mix today - we shall see!

It works! In just 3 hours all the sound deadening material in the floor pan had been frozen and chipped off leaving a perfectly sound rust-free surface ready for blasting.

More ice coming tomorrow and next job will be to reduce the quantity of isopropyl alcohol and also crush up the ice pellets more so as to make a paste which will hopefully stick to the vertical areas of sound deadening in the footwells.

I’m really pleased with the results. The cost of a box of dry ice was c.£80 (equivalent to an hour’s labour) and the time involved was about a quarter of what it would have normally taken Angus to just scrape and scrape and scrape it all off.

The sub-zero temperature has conducted through the floor pan to the underside but apparently because the schutz is so flexible it doesn’t freeze and go hard like the sound deadening, so this will have to be removed by a different method - covering it in diesel apparently works, even if it is very messy!

Diesel solvent on the underseal didn’t work apparently so back to good old paint stripper and scraping…
