Mine was rebuilt well 3K ago, I like it a lot apart from.....

Changing from 5th to 4th at speed - anyone else find this nearly impossible to execute?

It obviously should not be a problem. Check the various bushes for wear.

Oh yes: I got a fully rebuilt one that I put in. It was a bit baulky going down into fourth, and Swepco made it worse, it was terrible coming back out of fourth: to the degree that I actually pulled the gearlever off trying once :x .

The next box was better, but baulked something terrible dropping into forth: didn't seem to make any difference whether you double de-clutched, continuous rev gearchanges, or banged it straight in. Not every time mind you, which made it even more frustrating.

I've driven hundreds of cars (ex-motor trader you see) and never had that sort of trouble before, even with knackered gearboxes. Horrible!

I'll have the 901 next time please ....

I have a 915 box. I find it's very easy to grind the gears when changing quickly from 5th to 4th.

I probably only do it 1 or 2 times a year because when it happens I make a big mental note to take my time in the future.

who says things always change for the better???!!!

all the 911s I've driven with 915 boxes feel a tad agricultural - I think the first one I drove was on a track day in Jurby on the IoM - made me realise how much better the 901 shift felt (and I guess that is saying something!)

mind you the gearbox in a 993 is lovely..

Mines sweet....no problems!!

Guess I'm just lucky to have one where all the tolerances have ended up in my favour. :)

The new synchros I put in were a bit reluctant at first, but a firm hand (shoulder?) when changing gear and a few thousand miles have put that right. :)

If the clutch adjustment isn't spot on then things can be sticky, even if it apparently clears at idle.

I, too, have never had a problem with a 915. As I mentioned above, check your linkages and bushes

Makes me wonder whether the really fresh boxes take some serious miles to bed in: certainly all of my linkage stuff was brand new, with no slop + setup as per the manual.

Perhaps I just can't drive :drunken: .

Bootsy, Just been thinking about this one whilst repeatedly quickly changing from 5th to 4th!! :)

Maybe the sliding gate under the stick isn't working properly? When I bought my car the gearshift was an entirely random affair, the bushes were shot, but also one of the springs on the gate was missing. There was nothing other than your own judgement to guide you from 5th to 4th... . Maybe worthwhile pulling the lever off an having a look?
