Yes Neil, the crank is 100% right, original sizes and perfect surface finishes. On the mains anyway!
Taking the rods off today to see if the big ends are as good, but not expecting a surprise.

Oil pressure was really strong, always has been.

Fresh bearings, chains etc throughout on the rebuild.

WEVO gateshift actually arrived, an expensive small box of natty bits.

Took the rods off the crank, bolts much harder to unscrew than I thought, but all big ends are wonderful. Crank RINGS and RINgs and rings, and ring, and rin,ri,r :)

Cleaned the cases of old sealant, bagged a lot of parts up and had a big tidy and de-oil of the floor, the bench and me.

So wish the rods and pistons were coming soon.
Heads having a final clean/soak overnight ready to be dropped-off for twin plug machining.

Started a ring binder to put the BIG BILLS already amassing away, out of sight, out of mind.

He certainly doesn't hang about

Can I ask as part of the twin-plugging of the heads, do you have to specify how the spark plug thread is indexed?
Always wondered whether they could fix the positioning of the thread if they tried hard enough.
If all heads are set identically you have to buy an awful lot of randomly indexed plugs to get a set of 6 that work well ( or in this case 12 ).

I'm guessing you aren't fussed about indexing but there probably is a very small power gain to be had if you can.

The parts are starting to arrive, but the JE Pistons and Carrillo rods will not be here for weeks and months and months.
I worry Iwill loose the early part of the hillclimb season. Time will tell.

So, have cams that took three days, Geteshift that took four weeks, rest will take ages.
Gary, you car will be done before this engine I fear.

Already running out of jobs on the engine.

Going to make a rip off of the storm ski Racing wrist pin clip insertion tool soon, but that's only a few hours if I relax.

The heads are drilled to a set position, prob based on the RSR head.
Plug orientation?
Never even remotely thought about that!

I index my plugs. Generally only takes me 6-7 for a 4 cylinder

I doubt the factory bothered, buy maybe they did?
More to be gained by boat tailing the crank case webs and scalloping the barrels which could be done in a production manner, no hand crafting needed.
Doubt also the very mass produced plug manufacturers do this, but there is a statistic chance of the threads starting perfectly for th Porsche engine v electrode leg position?

TBH, never heard of anyone doing this, but I'm a hillclimber so live in a tiny bubble!

There isn't much of a performance gain, if any ( up to 1% quoted for single spark), but that's a possibility of another 3bhp on your engine for pretty much free.
Of course the gains may be less ( or more ) on a twinspark engine.
Of course if you are running multi-electrode points then nothing to be had.

I'm not aware of a plug manufacturer standardising thread start, so you will need to try out the plugs yourself and match to cylinder head. Another method others use is washers but that's not a good idea in my view.

It was all really an aside but something you could easily do for the hell of it!
Also great for those who suffer from OCD.

You will have gathered, I don't!

Read on Impact Bumpers there are shortages everywhere inc the UK for engine parts.
He was right.

Did a good size order with Design911 today for engine bearings, gaskets, chains etc etc etc, £1000 so 7% discount.
That's £70 to take the wife out to keep things sweet. :compress:

No main bearings and no chains and no idea of re-stocking date. :?

I think I will certainly be missing the start of next year!

Hope they arrive before the Pistons and Rods.

I got all my engine parts from Rose Passion, maybe worth trying them even with the duty fun and games?

Will check with them Gary, thanks.

Have paid for them now, but as we are talking £130 not a big deal to have some, nothing in the scale of this engine build....

My immediate thoughts on first reading this a couple of days ago were a) washers and b) those spark plugs with four electrodes. Why are those bad solutions?

Was there any debating of the diameter of your 2nd spark plugs?

Nobody has mentioned a smaller dia thread plug, just the same thread as the ones 'on top'
I think the 70's RSR's had the same plugs top and bottom.

Remember this is a hillclimb engine, a run is around 31 to 54 seconds, 80% is WOT, about 6 gearchanges and three very hard brake applications. 5 runs a weekend if you are lucky, 10 events, about 40 miles a year.

The engine coming apart is only 250 miles old, and has had 5 oil changes.

Not sure I will notice plug orientation or type tbh, not that sensitive a driver.. :blackeye:

Graham, I have the stomski piston circlip tool if you want to borrow/copy it.
Also have their cylinder hold down nuts which are useful during reassembly.
