Perfect! That will be like a different car, and have buckets more torque too

Re: KS's hillclimbing odyssey
That is going to be a really torquey engine, and the soundtrack from the driver’s seat will be brilliant!

Re: KS's hillclimbing odyssey
It made 130bhp at best before, but 125bhp when we reduced carb chokes to improve low-end pick up. That extra 50bhp and accompanying torque should be fun.

Re: KS's hillclimbing odyssey
Well, today I got to drive the car round the block a couple of times. It's fast! Oh, and it's loud! Final run on the Dynajet rolling road at Rawspeed Engineering showed 185bhp at 5600rpm, and around 180lb ft of torque! God bless throttle bodies... What a difference. Still have a few things to iron out, such as the tacho (one of tomorrow's jobs), and doing the valve clearances (a hateful job on a 914 with SSI heat exchangers!).
The engine is mechanically very loud (not as in exhaust or induction noise, but internals). The Type 4 engine has an aluminium case, which is notoriously noisy with regard to sound transmission, and the JE forged pistons like to slap around when cold (zero pin offset...). Add that to Biral cylinders with aluminium fins and steel pushrods, and you get to hear everything that's going on inside the motor. The induction noise is seductive, though!
The brief road test was an eye-opener, with the car pulling like a train and the Quaife ATB diff doing its stuff on a damp road. Mike Bainbridge's rebuilt gearbox shifts beautifully, but then what else would you expect from the sage himself?
Here's another overlong, boring video. Enjoy if you can!

Re: KS's hillclimbing odyssey
I like the way you raise the camera as the revs rise, as though aiming to catch the internals at the apex of their trajectory!
