914 not starting when hot?
My 914 has Webers with a distributor with electric points. On the way home from a concert it reluctantly started, ran rough and then wouldn't restart when I stopped for petrol. Someone pushed me and it started. When I got home it refused to restart.
The engine is turning from the starter motor but doesn't fire. I tired taking the vacuum advance off the distributor but not luck.
Strange thing is that is starts first time in the morning when cold?? Generally takes longer to start when hot. Also starts running worst after 20 mins of driving?
Normally I would suspect the points but it doesn't have any? I was hoping that removing the points would make is more reliable.
It going in for a tune up on Wednesday but any ideas about what might be causing the issue? It frustrates me these cars are so more difficult to tune than a 616 engine

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
Neil they are no different.
Plugs
Points (you don’t have any)
Coil (over heating?)
Condenser (probably gone with the points)
Fuel (delivery, pressure, feed)
All the same as a 356, and can only be one of the above

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
After 20mins it’s full heat soaked.
Is it overheating? Tight valves, thermostat working & air flaps open at the correct angle,
Is the carb boiling once the cold air stops flowing through it? Get a can of “ezi-start”. If a blast of that makes all the difference you have a fuel problem.
Otherwise, as above, overheating coil / ignition module/ etc.

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
I think I will start with replacing the coil.
Are the flamethrowers good? Is this suitable for my type 4?

Otherwise I can order a Bosch coil for about £28

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
I ran a flamethrower when I had a Petronix set up, I changed to a Power Spark module and used one of their Viper coils. I found it to be excellent!!neilbardsley wrote:I think I will start with replacing the coil.

Fuel vaporisation? Sounds about right for it.

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
what fuel pump are you using? If electric is it live on the ignition or have you got a priming timer or the like, wondering if when its hot the fuel is evaporating from a short restart?

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
It's on the ignition and inline but I suspect the fuel pump isn't the issue.
When I got home I tried to restart the second I stopped it and it wouldn't start. I can't see the fuel changing that quickly

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
When you stop after a run, the under bonnet temperature rises and the fuel pump evaporates and the car won’t start till it has cooled down a bit.
This is a classic fuel evaporation Issue. Make sure you have a spark, but that’s my guess.
I think Sheffield University did the research and found ethanol levels were as high as 20% at certain times of the year.
5% central heating oil lowers the boiling temperature.

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
Using phenolic spacers under the carbs helps reduce heat transfer and prevents fuel boiling in the float chambers.

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
I posted on the other thread but a new coil seemed to sort this problem. I installed the flamethrower coil made by Petronix to match the points

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
Try opening both the bonnet and the fuel cap, if hot start on full sunny day is a problem.
It’s worked twice for me, anyway.

I installed spacers after finding fuel condensing and dripping onto the engine, on a track day on the Silverstone GP circuitKS wrote:Using phenolic spacers under the carbs helps reduce heat transfer and prevents fuel boiling in the float chambers.

Re: 914 not starting when hot?
I'm struggling to find any 44mm spaces. Everyone seems to be out of stock. Anyone seen any?
