Just saying 'hi'

Post by fareham123 »

Just wanted to say 'hi' and thanks for letting me join the forum

I've been around old cars my whole life, a passion I inherited from my late father. I started out with a 1955 Oval beetle when I was 15 and things progressed from there! I currently own a 1965 356C which I've had for the last 18 years, and am also lucky enough to have a 1955 Triumph TR2 and a 1968 Iso Rivolta GT.

Having restored a 1950 beetle to concours and then being afraid to use it, I'm now a firm believer in owning cars that aren't so perfect that you're afraid to use them, especially as 356's fit very well into Aldi parking spaces!

Cheers
Pete

Welcome
Those are a great mix of cars
There is lots of love for early beetles on here as well as all Porsches but the Iso is on a different level and it would be great to hear about it.
It would be good to see pictures of any of them

Managed to work out how to add photos, so here we go...

First up is my '50. This is as found in a Swedish barn, I bought it just on this picture.

I spent the next 4-5 years slowly restoring it, and sold it at Stanford Hall, in 2003 I think. I'm really short on photos of the finished car as have somehow misplaced the album in a house move. I'll have good look for it soon. The photo below was taken at Stonor Park the year after I sold it. I'd be really interested to know where it is now, as its seemingly vanished, I guess exported.

So onto the cars I currently own...
My 1965 356C which I've owned for many years now. It was restored in the late '90's, and is a great driver. Its not the original colour (it should be black), and unfortunately doesn't have its original engine, but its a great car.

My 1955 Triumph TR2 is the opposite of the 356 - unsophisticated and crude in every way. It really highlights the differences between the essentially pre-war technology offerings of a lot of the British car manufacturers of the time, and the likes of Porsche. It shakes, rattles, screeches and slides but its lack of sophistication means its wonderful fun.

My Iso Rivolta is my latest purchase, its car #713 of a production run of 797 cars. With styling by Bertone and chassis design by Bizzarrini (after he left Ferrari) it was touched by some of the greats of Italian car design. #713 is a rarer IR-340 model which means its equipped with an Iso tuned Corvelle Stingray 327ci V8 producing a claimed 340bhp, its also seemingly the only one specified with a leather dash and the Iso Grifo gauge upgrade. It was one of a pair found in a backyard in San Francisco in 2019, and is now undergoing a rotisserie restoration at Double H restorations. The Californian sunburn will be retained, which I'm sure will ruffle some feathers.

Hi Yoda, as you asked (as I'm well aware this is nothing to do with early Porsches!) the article below, gives quite a good insight into the Rivolta, interestingly the car in the article was built only 5 cars after mine.

The main criticism of the Rivolta was the steering, but luckily as the Burman steering box is shared with the MK2 Jag I'm taking the opportunity for a quick box conversion. I'm also having one of the new Tremec TKO 5 speed transmissions fitted (mine originally had a Muncie 4 speed), which should really improve motorway journeys, as well as making things a bit more frisky off the line.
