What have I done...

Post by KS »

After years of successful drag racing, followed by years of cajoling from certain parties on DDK, I've finally bitten the bullet and had an entry accepted for my first hillclimb in the 914... Wiscombe Park on Saturday 24th April. There are four other Porsches from the Williams-Crawford stable entered, but I don't know if any of the hillclimb 'regulars' are there, too, as it's the same weekend as the opening round of the British and Midland hillclimb championships at Prescott.

And as a perfect example of doing things arse about face, I'm attending Graham's hillclimb school at Loton Park two weeks later (so I can learn where it all went wrong...).

Remember Keith.. hill climbing differs from drag racing - there are some corners

Have fun!

Jonathan will be there, he's married to the hill as I am to Loton. He will teach you the Right Way.

Slowly catch your monkey, a smooth approach will get you the times.
I've never run Wiscombe but have been there twice, it is a very nice hill, the run through the woods especially so.

To prepare yourself, watch a few videos!

I've been to Wiscombe several times, walked and driven up the hill, but Bunny's Leap and the gate are what scare me! Uncle Jonothan will put my mind at rest, I'm sure...Yeah, right.

Unfortunately I won't be there. Our daughter Kate is on the "at risk" register, so i probably won't be out to play until at least the end of May, when hopefully she (and Mrs JW & I!) will have had our 2nd jabs, and they will have kicked in.
Maybe by then I will have my ar$e in gear and have a car up and ready to go as well ...............
Wiscombe Park is a great hill, it has a bit of everything. As yellow491 says, nothing to worry about other than stone walls, river, trees, Devon banks, oh - and more trees ...........
Fortunately none of the above are on the black bit, so it gives an extra incentive to stay on the tarmac.
If your hands aren't shaking by the time you are parked in the top paddock, then you haven't been trying hard enough.

Here are a couple of tasters -

BTW, be careful not to spin your 914 across the finish line. I discovered a few years ago that the trees at the finish are exactly spaced to the length of the Dripool 914/6. It took a lot of bouncing and shoving to get it back out, fortunately for me, without a scratch when I returned it to its generous owner!

So basically, I should be OK in the paddock, then...

Just noticed your edit of Robert's comment!

So glad you didn't add 'smelly' to the list – my mother's description of DSJ when she knew him at the RAE Farnborough was 'a nasty smelly little man'!
