Carbon Carrera.

With the yellow Targa almost finished, I thought I'd better start a thread on the next fun project coming through the workshop.

Not one for the purists (not that any of my projects are) It's another Backdate I'm afraid, with no particular aim to replicate an earlier model, just to try to make something that's a nice thing to own and drive....

It started like this, Just your Common or Garden 911SC that had been parked under a cover on a drive way for many years and wasn't the better for it.

Image

Image

Image

Had a nice number plate though.

Image

Like a lot of these cars that were once "cheap" it had suffered from it's share of poor previous repairs

Image

Image

Image

So we stripped it down and put it on the jig.

Image

And started to cut way all the grotty bits

Image

And the parts that needed to be changed for the backdate

What do you have in mind for it though?
If keeping the SC rear flares it moves down the 'RS' route?

  Most of the car will be steel, it needed to retain that Porsche quality feel to it, But I had to call it something!

New metal going in.

We always use the later larger kidney bowl panel.

And a quick dry fit to check alignment

Next job on the list - Sunroof delete

Image

And whilst access was easy we trial fitted a half cage and welded in the mounting points

Image

Before trying this for size

Image

It required some trimming but not much and then we bonded it on using a 3M epoxy glue designed for a composite to metal bond.

And just about every clamp I could find in the workshop!

Image

Image

The next day clamps removed, just requiring edges to be sanded back flush with the screen surrounds.

Having used an original old steel bonnet to check gaps and alignment,

Image

We were pleased to find that the new version fitted just as well.

Image

With the new roof protected, we finished stripping the paint from the remainder of the shell.

Image

All old underseal cleaned off from underneath

Image

Epoxy primer applied to inner and underside

and panels

Before seam sealing all the joints

With the outer surfaces masked up

Image

the underside is given a coating of underbody stonechip protection, which will then be painted over.

As are the underside of the front wings.

Sorry not the most exciting update! It gets better....
