Re: Carbon Carrera.
So with the filler work done blending the new skin into the metal on the A and C posts, and prep on the rest of the body completed, into primer it went (a black primer as the car will be a dark colour).
Instead of primer over the roof skin I applied a clear lacquer after sanding the gel coat with 800grit
I also treated the bonnet in the same way before applying a stencil.
The colour coats were then applied, before removing the stencil
And then lacquering
The roof treated in the same way, with the colour along the gutter but instead of a hard line the colour is faded out as it rises towards the roof
The colour incidentally is a custom colour based on Porsche Metallic Black 708

Re: Carbon Carrera
That looks fantastic Jon. Did you replace the NSR corner of the wing by the rear light cluster, or is it a trick of the light? If you did, and you have any pics they would be appreciated as I need to do similar on the 964. I might do a local repair rather than use the whole quarter I bought as that seems overkill if the rest is good...
The carbon in the graphic has a touch of houndstooth fabric about it!
Brilliant work as always

We cut it off to repair the end of the chassis rail and then welded it back in place.rhd racer wrote:Did you replace the NSR corner of the wing by the rear light cluster, or is it a trick of the light?

Re: Carbon Carrera.
Once lacquered the roof and bonnet are flatted down again as the 1st coats tend to sink into the weave.
The rest of the car and panels are then brought up to the same stage with the colour base coat applied
And the whole lot lacquered again
Other areas such as luggage bay and engine compartment painted
Before flatting the whole lot again with 1500, 2000, 3000
And then a 3 stage polish.

Struthe!
Well, looks can kill...
Did you choose the colour because you could show the carbon weave by simple clear over it?
If the car was, say, red, I guess you would have to put solid colour over the carbon, or can you 'ghost' colour over the weave so it shows to some degree?
Very nice job all round!

Re: Carbon Carrera.
We mixed the colour to be as close the the carbon as possible, we wanted the carbon details only to be visible when up close, from a distance the car all looks painted.911hillclimber wrote:

You could also paint the car in the same way with a different colour, and whether that blend on the side of the roof would work would be a matter of opinion. I'm not so sure.
We are currently building a 964 with a carbon roof and the car is to be painted in olive green metallic, another dark colour, I may try the same paint fade on the roof but more than likely it will be hard line masked between the colour and the carbon.

Re: Carbon Carrera.
That looks superb Jon. The colour is just perfect. Another stunning bespoke build with such clever imagination.

Carbon Carrera.
It’s really lovely Jon, I can see that bonnet graphic signature feature getting ripped off!
Maybe make the next roof from tinted carbon? I remember seeing a blue tinted bare carbon Veyron once and it was awesome.

Re: Carbon Carrera.
Thanks chaps, it's been fun to do.
A few pictures taken outside show what I mean by the carbon areas of the panels only being visible close up.
Also a hint at the interior....
