68 SWB 912 AKA Isabella

Hi. Long time lurker, seldom poster usually found on IB stirring things up. I’m Haith.

Recently bought a 1968 SWB 912 lhd first registered in Italy. I’ve affectionately named her Isabella. Ddk seems the place to discuss things earlier.

So, what’s she like? Tatty but reasonably solid.

Carpet was wet so I took a bit out to dry, then another bit - in short, the interior is now stripped out ready for preventative rust treatment and paint. Carpet drying nicely. A bit of dodo mat going in to keep it from being too tinny. Handbrake assembly and gearstick assembly out for a refurb and clean/paint.

Undecided on whether to fit a new headliner. A new one has been fitted but poorly. Windscreen and rear screen need to come out to fit new ally trims which I didn’t get with the car. Plus front screen has clouding in lower corners so will fit a new windscreen I think.

Previous owner took the carbs and tinware off to clean/service and repair/paint respectively. I’ve rebuilt the carbs since bringing her home and they went back in this afo. If anyone has any info on the carb linkage back to the throttle cable I’d appreciate it. Not much in the couple of manuals that came with the car. Also any details/photos of tinware fitted? I’m piecing together a jigsaw with no picture on the box.

Starting her up. Any advice on how to fire her up after a lay-off and reinstall of carbs?

The paintwork is tatty. Looks like someone has painted her at home at some point. Rough old Irish green. But I like it. Kinda ratty tatty.

Wheels are Fuchs but again, they need a refurb. I’m thinking of having them shadow chrome powder coated then masking off for petals. I’ve already bought new 165/80 15 continental tyres.

Need new window frames or to get these refurbished. Opening front quarter is really stiff. I’ve been spraying it with lube but it’s no better really. Need new seals in all side windows.

Do the bumpers have a rubber seal to the body?

Thanks. Photos and a DDK are a bug bear. 800px wide, 256kb max. I just lose the will!

Hi Haith
Have you seen this YouTube channel. He’s just finishing his engine (not totally original 912, but close enough maybe) - tinware & linkages all covered

SeanP is big into 912

Love it - great colour combination!

I hope you will just drive it and improve it gradually while using it, rather than taking it apart and having it off the road for years like many of us have. I really wish someone had said that to me... 20 years ago now...

All the best!

Welcome to DDK - nice car

Bear in mind you can host images elsewhere and use the [img] tags to post them where too

Hi Dean,

Exactly what I'm hoping to do. Its got a crusty exterior and I'm sure the sills will need doing but its fairly solid so I'm going to use it. Hopefully be running by next week and on the road for spring.

Cheers
Haith

Thanks. I've worked out I can upload images off my phone by choosing the smallest photo setting. Just used to blasting away with pics as on IB etc. Much easier to be honest Bootsy
