Haha, I wondered if you might mention that Richard! I have erased the entire thing from my memory, the internet and everything else. I'm not even sure it really happened

You started it!
I am very much hoping that someone will produce photographic evidence that it did happen. Silverstone? What year...?

That car looks like a lot of fun, be very interesting to see what it makes.

Re: Looking for 1970-1973 base to build a 1970's race car
I am off to look at Bob Mortimers car tomorrow but I will be honest I suspect it is a wasted 5 hour round trip.
The auction house are being really odd about the chassis numbers on it.
Initially they said there were no numbers stamped into the boot floor and they had been removed, then they relcutantly sent a photo and you can see there are numbers. It maybe they are just busy.
At that point they offered to give a refund post sale if the numbers dont match the VIN / V5c without me asking for anything of the sort.
It alll seems a bit odd, if its been reshelled shouldnt it have had its vin changed ?
I remember well buying old race cars back in the day and the numbers not matching when they were £10k it didnt really matter.
I am not for one minute thinking that the vendor has done anything wrong and I hope I get there and the numbers match but the auction house are just being really weird about it.

Hi Phib,
I agree, it all sounds a bit odd.
It would be very interesting to hear what you find out.

It may just be the auction house covering their backside which is what I hope ..... Especially with a 5hr drive !!!

More likely they just don’t know. Identifying a legit 911 stamp is hard enough when you know what to look for, auctioneers who deal in dozens of marques must find it tough to even remember where the numbers are.

Re: Looking for 1970-1973 base to build a 1970's race car
a lot of reshells wil just have had the orginal cars chassis number transfered across .. even the Porsche factory did this ( if I remember correctly a 1973 RS ,of which in recent years there were 2 cars with the same chassis number, after the orginal wrecked shell wasnt destroyed but was left under a tarp only to be rediscovered years later and rebuilt ) .
I personally have no problem with a car being restored using a donor shell as the basis if its done correctly & for the right reasons & isn't trying to be fraudulant ( + the orignal shell is destroyed ) ... restoring an original shell with all new metal to the extent the the only original metal is the bulk head isnt really any different

Re: Looking for 1970-1973 base to build a 1970's race car
Thanks for the feedback, i am basically just expecting an old race car that's straightish with a decent engine.
When I was originally told about it by them it was described as genuine RS shell, which I dont belive it is.
Obviously rightly or wrongly I am expecting the price to reflect this ...
I'm planning on using it for hilclimbs etc etc
With numbers on the v5 / vin plate that match at least the front of the car !

Re: Looking for 1970-1973 base to build a 1970's race car
The secret number under the dash will tell you if it is/was an RS shell. The subtle differences in the construction of the shell will also tell you. On a race car with a stripped out interior the obvious place to look is around the rear of the centre tunnel.

It isn't an RS shell, it's a re-built 1972 911S shell.

A 72 shell with the rear quarter oil filler flap (it helps if I actually look at the photos ) with a rebuilt 2.7 engine and yet an E tach.
You obviously know this car John. Does it have genuine steel RS rear arches or SC?
