Advice on getting a bit more power

I’m asking on behalf of a friend of mine in Toronto.

He has a 1968 912. Big bore engine. Matching numbers. Weber carbs.

He says the engine runs well enough, but lacks a bit of grunt. Wants a drivable car.

He’s considered putting in a new engine from Fat Performance and others. My experience of these engines is that they have plenty of power, but at the top end of the rev range.

What options or advice would you give to boost his current set up? Ignition? Carbs? Airflow/exhaust?

Any advice really welcome and appreciated.

Really depends on budget, first question though is the engine he is currently set up correctly? Perfect ignition and carb settings could help a lot.

Mine ran well enough when I first bought it but an hour on a rolling road having a full ignition and carb setup transformed it, I can honestly say it was the best £140 I’ve spent on the car.

If it’s all set up for max performance already then to go to the next performance level he’ll need to look at after market cams, upping the cc or a twin plug setup really. There may be small gains to be had from exhausts, porting/polishing etc but it’s marginal at best.

Alternatively look at putting a hot VW motor in if that suits, it doesn’t have to be all top end revs, it depends on the setup you go for.

Or speak to John Benton or Willhoit restoration
Open wallet surgery. But a fuel injected 1720 or a 2.2 616 engine would certainly float my boat. All that handling and power to match would frighten a lot of people on the B roads.

Although a lot of people have been impressed with the turn of speed and handling a well set up near stock 912, (Webber carbs and free flowing exhaust), has. I managed to keep up with the 911’s on the Jurassic tour the other year.

The 616 engine likes to be above 3000 RPM and buzzes along between 3500 and 4100 RPM. If you drive it like a granny and change gear at 2500 RPM than its not going to give you the full potential.

Fit a Polopolus engine as I am doing although as mentioned open wallet surgery required
