Hi all

I am slowly getting through getting parts and restoring my rhd 911T ‘72 and am after the best aftermarket seats. My CoA says the car came ‘Sports Seats’ which were ‘Black Leatherette with Dogtooth Check Inlays’.

I’ve seen the Rennsport ones which look nice but the hinges and other details aren’t quite right for what I think would have been in mine. I’m not sure if when my CoA says ‘Sports Seats’ they would have been different from a standard seat, and perhaps the reactor style attached to this thread!? Any guidance on that would be great.

I came across the attached leatherette/check (see last photo) at deser.it and was interested in peoples thoughts on whether they would be the right ones to get if I wanted as close to OEM but without buying OEM as they are out of my budget. The rennsport ones are about £600 per seat whereas these are closer to £1200 per seat. Really appreciate any thoughts.

I agree your point on cosmetic correctness but I would say the BF Torino / RennSport seats are the most comfortable replica sports seats I have used. I've had them in two cars and they were brilliant. I also had the D'eser seats and they felt much firmer and you sat up higher on them rather than in them so I think its worth seeing if you can try a pair to see what you like.

There are also a few other good Recaro Sport replica seats - have a look at "tangerine911" / Carpoint on ebay. I've not had a pair but am told they are very good by people who have used them. Worth investigating.

I have sat in the BF/RS seats and they were nice, very soft from what I can remember, but the hinges bothered me and the deser ones just look much firmer, fuller and more OEM to what I think the sports seats are meant to be. And to your point which makes sense about them meaning you sit higher, which I felt a bit gangster in the BF/RS ones from what I recall, so sitting a touch higher I’d prefer. Those carpoint ones are the deser ones from what I can see; same photos as deser sent me.

I have replica sports seats in my 72E, black leather and houndstooth insert. I do not recall who made them, Alan D may remember.

Aside from aesthetic issues I think a trial sitting is essential, the soft inlay part is quite narrow at the back of the seat base and with the firmer section to each side they can create numbness after a while. Long trips can end up less than comfortable. Short fun trips are great as there is a lot of backside location.

As I use the car more for road trips and less for speed now the former aspect begins to be more important.

I recently borrowed Gary71's Rennsport seats in my hard sprung 73T substituting for my racing seats (car was a hill climb car).
After several long journeys they really are very very nice.
Might depend on your 'proportions' but sure suited me and my wife (most importantly).

I have sat in the Rennsport ones and they were soft and I sat quite low as I don’t have much meat on the bone So the idea of a firmer seat pad that might give a slightly higher rise height appeals, but the biggest factor on looking at these over the Rennsport is the quality of these, in terms of fullness and accuracy of the originals. I think if I put Rennsports in, I’d always looks at the hinges and slimmer bolster and wish I’d invested in the more expensive ones. That’s my personal feeling and it’s been really useful having all these inputs to challenge what I want.

So unless there is another deser type level of accuracy brand, I think I’ll pull the trigger on these. It looks like design 911 stock them slightly cheaper than importing direct, and I’ll speak to Gary about trimming the rears to match.

Feroz’s comments about the d’eser ones are worth re-reading.

I have those in my 911 and I fit in them OK... but I do have a narrow @ss!

However when I have loaned the car to wider patrons, I have received complaints about them wanting more space between the bolsters, and getting numb bums on long drives.

Bloody fussy feedback when they are getting to borrow my car I’d say, but that’s a separate topic

Thank you James. Unfortunately...or fortunately for me, that if I ever got locked out the car, I could probably get my skinny ass through 2mm gap in the door. So I don’t need loads of room. Neither do I want anyone else getting too comfortable in the drivers seat

I’m also in London, so maybe after lockdown I might be able to convince you to let me have a seat in your car and see why I think

My 2 cents... I have had both Deser and BF Torino and if the Deser's are the best reproduction, BF's are far more comfortable. When we make a long trip like 8 hours in the car, it makes a Huuuuge difference...
