Well worth doing, I’m no stickler for originality (as the rest of my car shows!) but this is one of those areas that’s so obvious.

I have asked Martin to reshape the latch panel in line with the one that was removed. I am pretty sure he was going use sections from the removed panel as these were in good order. He really gets the detail and you can see that in his work.

Further photos of progress. The car should be in a epoxy in a couple of days' time!

The sound deadening pads were removed to check for rust or issues underneath. There were a couple of patches of surface rust - nothing noteworthy and plenty of evidence of the original Signal Orange. There was one small puncture wound that you can see near to one of the seat hinge points bottom left of central in this photo. It looks like it could be from a rear end shunt that the car suffered but the angle of the 'wound' suggests it wasn't from running over something - who knows....

Anyway you can see it all looks in very good order


And here is the parcel shelf - so clean:)


Lastly here is the replacement engine cover in place - it isn't a new one just new to the car - the one on the car had seen better days - repairable but it would take quite a few hours of work...


There are some more localised repairs, the corners to re-attach and some fettling of the engine cover and door gaps prior to epoxy....

Wow! What Targas lose in rusty floors, it looks like they may gain in solid back seats.

It is is very exciting looking at the the candidate paint colour:

In poor light but with some original faded and sanded paint on the car:


In better light with a 'googled early 911' for comparison:


The car will be in colour tinted epoxy by early next week.

The dash needs some holes filling where the later dash had additional switches - this dash/bulkhead was cut from a mid/late 80s car....

Martin has a few jobs to complete but I am looking forward to seeing the car in signal orange

Are you blocking up the 3 vents as well? Useful to have, but a major giveaway that all is not as it seems underneath

Hi Gary is there a useful picture or diagram showing what vent holes should be there in a 1971 dashboard? I imagine that the hole just in front of the speaker aperture is not meant to be there but you mention 3. Apologies as I have only ever had a bodied lhd to rhd conversion dashboard Frankenstein affair or this which is obviously much later.

I will do further research but if you have a diagram or photo I would be really grateful.

This is my (obviously LHD!) ‘72 dash, not sure if RHD is sym op, or something different.

As far as I know all the holes are original except the little one just to the right of where the column goes through.


I’ll mark up the vents on your picture and post it up in a minute.

I believe there is a similar angled slot on the LHS as well.

Maybe more importantly, do you have the correct year RHD dash top?
If so, all those extra vent holes will be hidden.
