Porsche 968 Club Sport

As promised here's an update on my new car, not to everyone's taste I'm sure but turning out to be quite a good find.

Replacing the 993 was always going to be tricky, but needs must as the bank of Mum and Dad was required to create another property owning millennial. Air-cooled was out the equation but after looking around at other marques decided I still wanted to stay with Porsche. People were trying to persuade me to go modern, but have to say the thought of a 996, Cayman or Boxster just didn't do it for me, had to be a classic and preferably with luck in an uncertain future, maybe even a bit of a sleeper.....

What does do it for me though is rarity, limited number production runs and cars with unusual detail design elements to them. The handling reputation of the 968 had caught my eye and I began to realise the Club Sport fell into those categories, only 179 rhd cars so pretty rare and great quirky detail bits with all the weight saving going on.

I'd put the word out I was looking for something, and with serendipity being such a wonderful thing at the end of last year a guy got in touch who thought I might be interested in his Club Sport..... oh and by the way it's Riviera Blue!

It's lived up north all it's life, so had to introduce it to a classic car location on it's first drive to it's new home, not sure what 'Jenks' would have made of it though......

Hi Mike,
I think you bought this from my neighbour a few doors down from me, I saw it being driven off some weeks back and did wonder if it was anyone on here. Hope you enjoy the new ownership.
If I’m honest I can’t say I’ll miss seeing that vibrant smurf colour on our local roads ;) I prefer my blues slightly more muted... :) But it is indeed a special and rare car to find, bravo!
Cheers
Ben

So it's in it's new home now, but to backtrack a bit it did take the best part of 7 months to get here, what with a global pandemic slightly complicating things!

To cut a long story short, after seeing it I got Porsche Inspections https://www.porscheinspections.com/ to take a look. Not knowing enough about them the worry was people do try to pass off a 968 Sport as a Club Sport, and if it is a real one had it been thrashed to death and been on it's roof as a race car perhaps. Anthony the trans man, sorry transaxle expert did the 23 page report and basically said yep genuine CS and one of the best he'd seen and all original in terms of welds and panels and so on. Never had a cage in it, no filler anywhere and incredible rust free with mostly original paint, the only downside was that it had been neglected with little having been spent on it over the past 10 years apart from brakes, even the tyres were nearly 15 years old!

So it was picked up and delivered for recommissioning to EMC in Birmingham, the acknowledged experts in the model. The brief was to give it the best full service it had ever had and check over everything else. Kevin and his sons at EMC got stuck in, their trophy cabinet just a small selection of their Porsche racing silverware......

Looks a beauty

A Silver 968 came towards me yesterday and I thought how good it looked on the road

I think it looks lovely Mike. The hardback seat option too (assuming it was an option and not standard) makes it for me. I think colour coded wheels was an option too wasn’t it (or maybe std, and some de-optioned for silver)

I managed to find a pic of it on holiday some 13 years ago when those tyres were nearly new!

https://forums.vwvortex.com/showthread. ... vy-on-pics!

I have always liked them, and agree that it has potential even short term to do well from a value perspective. The number of 924s / 944s appearing on eBay ‘barn finds’ I think is indicative of interest in the transaxle cars. Clearly the 968 is the ultimate evolution of them, so that and limited numbers plus the sort of report you have sounds like a great buy.

How does it drive? I have only driven 924s / 944s with 160bhp, so imagine a 50% increase on that is tremendous fun? Enjoy it!

I think a 924 S is about 1100kg, the 968 over 1300kg so they’re not as different as the power figures suggest.

Lost count of the number of hours I spent drinking in that pub, or chewing the fat with Jenks while one of my Beetles was on the rollers at Phegre, as his man Don tickled my Webers. Happy memories.

Oh, and a fab car that looks, too! Bravo!

Thanks for the comments and I'll come to how it drives shortly, but just to say I was really surprised!

The Club Sport came with hardbacks as standard, comfort seats were the option as were the colour coded wheels. These seats are the very rare original version of the Recaro CS seat, they changed subtly after a year or two with more reinforcing to the shell. Can't believe how comfortable they are, I'd imagined they would be rock hard, very narrow and instant back ache but not at all!

Having said that I have picked up a set of the comfort seats for any touring trips...

Nice buy Mike.
Saw the 993 up at Jaz a few weeks ago.
Have you sold it already?
Worth keeping the plate, at least

Yep recommended Jaz to the new owner from a list of indies around London he had drawn up, and let the BLU plate go as the deal for the new car hadn't been done at that stage unfortunately!

On my first ever road trip with my old RS up the west coast of Scotland with the PCGB in 1995 a white/red club sport seems to latch on to my tail at every opportunity. I had the nose of the car in my rear view mirror most of the day touring Skye. It was damn fast (nearly new car then) and couldn’t be shaken off no matter what, even in the very twisty bits. I thought it a good looking car then and still do. Nice buy Mike.
