Great story James. Bit like triggers broom now though. Mercedes have taken all the patina / dents out of the shell. Shame.

Remarkable journey. That 50mph, continuously, in a noisy 300GD would have shortened my trip to a weekend...

slowest vehicle Ive ever driven was a 300 GD lwb AUTO with expedition kit .. that non turbo diesel from memory has about 80 bhp ? . Acceleration was dangerously slow  My 1967 series 2A landrover was way quicker ......I can see why he travelled at 50mph , because it wouldnt really go any quicker

.

If you think that was slow James, you should try driving down to/then up & over the Pyrenees (& back) in a Citroen Dyane -also done the same journey in a Renault 4 van ...

Thanks for posting that James, I really enjoyed it.

In the early ‘90s upon returning from a family holiday in France (towed a caravan) I had the idea of swapping my Lancia Thema Turbo 16V for a G-Wagen. A friend of mine knew someone in Shrewsbury that owned one, so I made contact and went for a test drive to see what I thought, dreadful thing I could not get out of it fast enough, made a Land Rover feel sophisticated.

Incidentally the owner, who worked on the oil rigs also had a side-line importing 911s from Europe and following the collapse of the Berlin Wall, Trabants. I suspect even those were nicer to drive on a normal roads that a G-Wagen

I saw one for sale in Auto Trader back in the late 80’s but it was a terrible pic. When l phoned, it was described as a German Range Rover which sounded fabtastic, they even agreed to take my 924 in p/ex. Upon arrival l couldn’t believe how ugly, chunky & clunky it was so made my excuses & left without even test driving. Have always considered that a lucky escape with a bit of luck over judgement. Not so long ago, a work colleague pulled up in an AMG version which was quite funky.

Wonderful machines. Couldn't see any British 4x4 making it around Europe never mind the globe. :)
Stick in a 5 cylinder turbo diesel with mechanical pump, good for around 270 horses. What's not to like.
