Engine dropped off and delivered to my engine man...Surprisingly light and moveable fully assembled.

Tear down has begun, head work and some upgrades to come (new exhaust  )...Though at this stage I am keen to keep it 1.6 and simple. There are other cars in the garage that can "press on"

Trying to balance the dirty projects with some fun upgrades...Decided to remake the dash trim in wood. Cabinet maker friend donated some mahogany veener. A sharp knife, steady hand and some sealer later it looks convincing...

Steamed and formed an ignition Bevel piece...Subtle, but looks more finished

The eagle eye amongst you may have noticed afew anchor points added. I decided to update the seat belts and fit inertia reel systems. The original mounts and belts are fixed, the fronts are 3-point, but the shoulder belt has always been in an annoying position and the lap belt is more rib-cage containment

After some research and measuring I went ahead, drilled and reinforced new mounting points for the inertia reel belts.

Fixing plates...

Sill plates for lap belt...

Tunnel bracket and backing plate...

B-pillar reinforcement and nut plate...

Reel mount on inner arch, reinforced plate welded on both sides...

Rear fixed lapbelt mounts also added...

Everything painted, "fitted and tested"

Good to see critical welds left 'fat' instead of ground to oblivion.

Why not 1.72l pistons? Free HP at no additional cost.

Cut and shut roof rack...

...YOU WILL FIT !!

Bought this afew years ago (for a Beetle), but only got around to assembly. Originally It sits too high, and it was too long...Afew choice cuts later it sits a lot lower and neater. Will tack in place with inserted thread bar for strength and then remove for final welding.

What colour did you think it was Neil ?

Probably trick of the light...It’s still Velvet Red and remains the hardest colour to translate through an I-phone

In my experience, extra anything comes at a price. Where do I get these 1.72l free pistons ?
