If it's jumping out of second you can bet the engine has been punished too.

It’s been an age since I did anything on these but definitely have a memory of some sort of second gear issue caused by a shift cable sleeve which was very fixable.

Search for it on Rennlist, there will be threads.

Ah my bad. I assumed it was the same issue as on the same vintage 911 manual gearbox - synchro goes on 2nd and 3rd on tracked, modded and high mileage cars, and it starts jumping out of gear, apparently.
