67 912 “Scruffy B*stard”

Post by Spit Nolan »

Thought I’d start a thread on my 67 912 that I picked up in August 2019. I bought it along with a big old L319 Mercedes van and had originally thought there is no way I can afford to keep it, but the Mercedes sold almost instantly meaning this gets to stay.

I am an aircooled VW person really but have always dreamed of a SWB Porsche, didn’t think I’d ever be able to get one though.

So this is how I first saw it

Partly stripped but pretty damn solid.

This was the van if anyone was wondering...

Gone off and being fully restored as a Porsche race support vehicle by the new owner.

Got it back to our unit and just started collecting parts that were missing, thought I’d just focus on getting everything together before properly starting on it, as had other things going on outside of cars, as well as another Mercedes I was getting on the road first.
Image

So now that’s done and I have pretty much everything collected for the 912 it’s time to start (although now in lockdown and can’t get to the unit!)

Collection day..

Welcome.

I will look forward to learning/seeing more about your 912. Mysterious looking shop it came from.

It came from part of a very large collection, from a well known guy who is no longer with us unfortunately, it was all being sold off. Mine was one of the last ones out.

It looks a good basis for a rebuild - so what's the plan/inspiration?

My plan is to build it as a bit of a race/911R inspired build, but with a full interior for now. I want to somehow figure out how to get a child seat in the back. As this will be our only aircooled for the family until my VW Squareback project is also finished.
I don’t intend on building a replica of anything just taking bits I like and adding those. The car will be left a bit rough and ready, won’t be having a respray etc, the tea cup stains on the roof etc will be staying. I don’t like shiny too much, but I of course will need to paint some bits and blend some bits in.

So as I said, I started by just collecting parts.

So, a complete engine was one of the first things.

Hooked up to the 901 5 speed box to try it out, it’s a runner :)

Also managed to get a set of my favourite wheels...

Got it UK registered as quickly as I could...

Cool choice of wheels - but I'm biased. Did you buy them off of Steve?

They'll be a tight fit under those SWB rear arches - I had to get the back faces machined by a couple of mm and a bit of negative camber to get a comfortable fit under my standard LWB flares.
