Distributor Replacement Advice

Hello fellow 912 folk,

it's been some time since I was on the forum after suffering a troublesome year with my car. See post viewtopic.php?f=16&t=63428

It would seem that the good people at Zuffenhaus have made progress with the stuttering and stopping running issues that have plagued me for 16 months but now having some issues with timing settings on my distributor.

So, in light of possibly needing to replace the distributor I wondered what advice is out there with those running alternatives to stock dizzy's.
I've been pointed at the 123ignition dizzy from the NL, http://www.123ignition.nl/product.phtml?id=224
Andy Prill seems to no longer offer the RSR0012 that was around a few years back.
...and of course there's always the world of ebay for recon or used Bosch...

I'm running Weder 40IDFs on 1720cc bore.

So are there any other options and experiences out there?

Hi Carl,

Sorry to hear you have been struggling all this time with the same issue, hopefully you have nailed down the issue finally.

My car is also a 1720 on Weber 40idfs, my distributor is an 050 and runs well with this setup. In all honesty I think it is seen as a step down from an rsr0012 which as far as I am aware is a 009 recurved to 912 spec. The 050 if I recall correctly tends to only reach about 30 degrees full advance as opposed to the original 912 or rsr0012 which I think gets to about 32/33 degrees full advance. All of this considered it’s never caused me any issues nor is it noticeable, the 050 has always served me well.

I’m running a 123 Distributor on my 1720cc 356C works perfectly, requires no maintenance and comes with 356/912 advance curves preprogrammed.

The advantage is that you have accurate static timing, accurate max revs timing with a by the book advance curve and a nice fat spark.

My 912 has a Petronix Ignitor sold state electronic ignition (PT 1847) in a 050 distributor. It's run flawlessly for the 8 years I've had her. It was installed by the previous owner in the US who knew Harry Pellow and Dave Hillman and that was their recommended to him, together with a 1720cc big bore kit (Shasta 86mm pistons and A/C cylinders) and a Norris 337 cam, but running the original Solex carbs

If you already have an 050 there are some cheap Ignitors on eBay UK, worth a punt for little outlay...

Here is a good page with the different curves for the distributors. The 012 is a modified version of the 022. You may lose some performance from the 050 dizzy but a good one shouldn't cause running issues. I had both a 123 and rebuilt 022 both work well. However, with the 123 you don't have to worry about checking points

Go for the 123 distributor
1. Its not 50 years old and worn
2. It gives the correct advance throughout the range
3. They are as cheap as getting your old one refurbished back to factory spec
4. They use standard Bosch rotor arm and cap
5. Its a set and forget item

I fitted the 123 on my car a few years ago and it's worked really well.
Newer with better technology in my opinion.

I think I got mine from Holden vintage. They were the cheapest at the time but this was a while ago.quite easy to set up but I think you need to be careful you don't reverse the polarity on the 12v supply.

Hi all,

thanks for the amazing responses and info. Seems a few are running the 123 dizzy, so I decided to order one today. Fingers crossed it fixes the last few niggles and I'm back up and motoring for 2020!!

I'll keep you posted with progress.
