Gearbox earth or lack thereof and stuck driveshaft
Nearly ready to drop the engine - 2 issues (I wont mention the wiring) -
1/ There is evidence that an earth strap was attached from the box to the body as half of it still remains attached to the body but there is a distinct lack of connection to the box!! I have an earth running from the body to the rocker box cover - was this reason this has been done to earth both engine and box?
2/ I have unbolted the driveshafts - one came away easily - the other is stuck fast. I noticed that they have locating dowels so I presume pointless smacking it with a rubber mallet? It needs to be pulled away and the dropped.....am I missing something?

Earth:
Yes, a quick fix, prob works just as well as the neater box/body strap.
Best return to original imho.
UJ:
Corrosion twin the two downs and the cv and or the flanges.
WD 40 then some good smacks with a bigger hammer.
Engagement is around 8mm in cv and flange so grip came be high.
Once a gap opens more WD and a big pair of screwdrivers to wriggle the cv off.
The drake shaft has good lateral play to allow this.
Graham.

Re: Gearbox earth or lack thereof and stuck driveshaft
All good fun
The earth strap goes from the big stud on the body to the one of the bolts on the gearbox crossmember. Worth buying a strap before you put it all back in. Doesn’t have to be a Porsche strap, just one of the right length.
If you’ve got the four bolts out of the driveshafts then work your way around the outside with a heavy rubber hammer and it should eventually work it’s way free.
The other technique is once you’ve got the wheel end off (best to get them completely out of the way) you’ve got a nice big lever in the form of a the driveshaft which will get it off.

thanks chaps - some controlled violence then?
Next question - I cant seem to find a speedo drive? Is it a cable on a dog leg box? It may of course be that there is no cable as the speedo doesn't work? If it is supposed to be a cable where does it go into the gear box?

Controlled violence is normally the answer ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
I’ve not worked on a 901 box personally, but yes it’s a cable drive and a quick google suggests it’s a right angle drive on the tail of the box:

The end position looks similar to the 915 pointing at one of the hole in the heel bored under the torsion bar. The 915 cable has a large knurled aluminium threaded attachment that goes to the drive output.

Yes cable drive. Not right angle (at least not on my 901 box).
You can see the speedo cable in this post:

it's the one that's hanging down in this pic:

Which looks the same as the 915 cable (in principle and locations anyway)
The right angle bit was referring to the box itself.

Sorry, yes, understood re right angle.
Re: Gearbox earth or lack thereof and stuck driveshaft
well its out...…….lots of swarf inside which doesn't bode well. Very satisfying to beat the shite out of something with a rubber mallet

Swarf. Never a good thing!
Not sure whereabouts you are but this is the usual go to recommendation for new CV joints:

Re: Gearbox earth or lack thereof and stuck driveshaft
thanks Gary - added to my list of things to do. Roll on the summer of 2030 for its first outing lol
Re: Gearbox earth or lack thereof and stuck driveshaft
found the g/b earth strap - tucked away under the mount. So now have 1 homemade earth from the body to the rocker cover - one that is broken from the body to the side of the g/b and the correct one.....
Re: Gearbox earth or lack thereof and stuck driveshaft
engine and g/b now loose and resting on the trolley (thanks Mick) - now to jack the car up....gulp.
