NEC Classic Car Show

Post by jeremyg »

I’d never been before. Great day out, except for the bloody terrible Friday night traffic coming back on the M5.
For space, taste and design the Porsche Classic stand stood out.

So much to see and do. So many favourites and memories, and so many owners willing to chat.

Caught up with mdmax72 (who we met in the first flat 4 run) on the Spyder replica stand. He tells me there are a number of coupe builds coming through at the moment.

Spent some time drooling on the Volvo and Saab stands. Sorry.

/\ /\ /\ Wish I could have gone, but at Slough Swapmeet instead. I had my Carrera there one year. Great show and I have to admit I prefer multi-marque events far more than single-marque shows.

As for Porsche Classic, amazing what a 50th Anniversary can do for a car that was ignored for so many years...

I enjoyed it yesterday (went on the train ;) ) but was totally gobsmacked by the Pagoda up for sale at £267,500. GLWTS as they say

The Porsche corner was so spacious compared to so many other stands that just looked cramped and messy.

Yes there were many hopeful prices around. Most traders said they’re only too aware of the falling market, but still put on their brave face. The Bugatti stand was good too, with the cars arranged as a grid, ready to go.

Went today with the Wife.
Great show, loads to see, quality of exhibits was really good, far better than years gone by.

Crowds spoilt it. Just too many in the halls.
PCGB stand was exceptional and was a welcome Quiet-Zone with a free coffee.

I want the 908 please.

Mind you, Classic oil for £85/ 5 litres?
One spark plug in plain white box with Porsche on it? £30 each.

That Pagoda was 250K I think today.
£16 parking (same as last year!).
A show not to be missed. Going to try Sunday next year to see if the crowds are better.

I think it was just set dressing, but also noting the 914 anniversary and implying that it’s part of the range that Porsche Classic work on and supply parts for (?). The technicians in the work area behind were working on I know not what.

Some other things that took my fancy.

No - not so much on Friday I suspect Graham. We went then figuring it would be less crowded. Sounds like that’s right?

Thanks Jeremy.
Graham, anything older than 20 years is a classic?

I was quite taken with the Mini Y Register stand.
Early modern minis were Y reg, so early 2001 and thus on the rule of thumb above, soon to be classics...and there’s one on Autotrader at the mo for <£1000

Bloody hell yes.

A wonderful piece of Gandini design and a joy to rag around, especially in 16v GTi form. Properly good to steer.

The lightest ones were sub 900kg. For a big family car.

And the interior is glorious.
964 C2 Targa. 205 1.6 GTi. Testarossa. Fisher Fury Fireblade. Motorhome. Motorbikes. Scooters. Pushbikes. Threadbare Saucony Peregrines. Dog. Human relations and friends. 97.5%-built house.

I'd prefer this one - Rainer Becker's 910..

I was about to answer, but Sam pipped me to the post, obviously with some personal experience to boot!

I was going to say that the word ‘Classic’ has become pretty stretched in the car world, but if you use desirability as one of the determining factors then it would appear to qualify. As I understand it Graham, (now confirmed by Sam), the Sport and GT versions are sought after, some might even say ‘collected’. It was produced from 85-87 so it’s age would seem to qualify, and Marcelo Gandini designed. And it drives well.

So if I take the liberty of calling my 91 Saab 900 turbo cabriolet a ‘Classic’ then I reckon the Citroen BX Sport stacks up pretty well!
