Went to see a 996 which did not go to plan...
By a roundabout way we went to see a 2002 C2 996 today, dark blue, 74K miles and all the IMS etc all done. Black leather with a few nice options.
Went there 1/2 hearted but with a view to a change from the (now) perfectly running Boxster.
Would be ready to deal the Box +a few £1,000's if it was nice.
It certainly was, really nice car, tons of work done, huge bills to prove it and gleamed in the autumn sun.
Wife thought it fabulous.
Engine start was quite remarkable, the Boxster sounds like it is an EV by comparison.
Chatted to the Indie who had the car, but it is for sale by the owner, a friend of the Indie.
Asked about a Deal. Nope.
Indie did not want my Boxster simply because nobody is buy them (and other Porsches) in his recent experience, so unless the Box is very cheap then it would not sell.
Thus, if we wanted the 996 then we would have to find the money and sell the Box. Far too much hassle and ££££££ tied up.
The car is a simple fun car and I'm not convinced that such money and effort are worth it.
Clearly, the market is indeed depressed in his experience and has been over several months.
Suitably dejected and pondering our navel's, we went to Caffeine and Machines for lunch.
Have to say the 987.2 is not a bad place to be so part of me is relieved that a deal could not happen.
At the lunch stop we chatted to a Cayman (Gen 2 / 2.7) couple who by chance had parked next to us.
The wife was particularly taken by this car, more so than the 996. He wanted to sell it! But we resisted the temptation twice which probably underlines what some are doing in Porsche circles, wanting to sell but it is not easy unless you are ready to give it away.

Apart from the 'smoke on start up' issue - which seems to have been solved (hopefully) - virtually every time you've been out in the Boxster you've said what a brilliant car it is ...
So why do you want to get rid of it ?

Re: Went to see a 996 which did not go to plan...
I (we) ask that every time Andy.
It is a great car, just would like something 'more' to excite BUT keep the modern bits so Euro Tours etc are relaxing. (I'm old)
The 996 is a car that I've gravitated to post the thought of the 80's Merc.
This one today was really nice, had a lot of paint to tidy it but it was great to see and the engine was soooo much more exciting, and of course it is a '911'.
As someone put it on the PCGB site, the 996 is just a bit more grown-up to the Boxster.
The 987.2 is running the best it ever has, and I've teased it to try to induce the white smoke cold start, but no, all clear for 4 weeks and about 30 starts, so I feel happy to part with it and sleep at night.
Feel a bit like KS did with his Cayman...
Wife loved the 996, surprised her too, the 2002 face lift is a big move forward to the original 996. Mind you, she loved the Cayman!
Not the car we saw, but it looked like this, same wheels, same colour etc.

Re: Went to see a 996 which did not go to plan...
To test the water/market place I asked 2 indies who ask for moderns for purchase, one specifically 987.2 Boxsters what they would offer me for mine.
One replied, 'no thank you this time' and the other never responded.
I think I have this car for some time!
New front discs in the spring and a geo check adjust to factory spec. and hopefully off to Europe a few times.

What I do Graham is use the We Buy Any Car website.
No commitment and gives me the least amount the car is worth.
I then take a view, but it usually comes down to how keen I am to get rid of whatever car I have at the time!

Nothing is going to sell until after the election and only then if there’s a decisive result. Anyone remember the seventies.
Then and as we approach Xmas, it’ll be a good time to do a deal. Having said that the 987/997 are better cars than the 986/996 and the old Mercedes are better still with a two year warranty from the SL Shop. Just saying.

I've done the we buy any car a few months ago, 11,250 for the Boxster.
The value from then went UP over the next month of email pressure.
Here, the trade are not even interested.
Merc SL not on the wife's radar, but she loved the 996!

Interesting thread. I have plans to drive to the Arctic Circle next summer but the wife is not keen on doing it in the 911. Therefore I plan to purchase "a" Porsche early in the New Year and then probably sell it in late summer. The big question is what I should go for and I've lots on my radar from a 924S to a 996 and everything in between!
At some stage I should open a new thread to get people's input.

I would give £11500 for your Boxster if you want to get on !!911hillclimber wrote:I've done the we buy any car a few months ago, 11,250 for the Boxster.

Road trip
Do it in the winter. Much more fun and you can do skids on a frozen lake whilst you are up there!

Re: Went to see a 996 which did not go to plan...
Back to the subject:
tonight webuyanycar is valuing the car @ £11,123
This, if taken, and actually achieved, would send the car to an auction or the car sold to the trade.
So, they buy the car @ £11,123, mark up for the huge effort they obviously put in and sell for ..?
On Piston Heads, some kind of barometer I guess, these cars are quite rare to find for sale and are posted around the £14K mark.
If a dealer expects, say, a £2K profit, there is a very tight squeeze here for all to make the money.
Then turn to this 996. £17.5K asking price, 2002 face lift, nice, all the right work done and bills for £5K over last 2 years, even a nice colour.
I was happy to give the Boxster and £3K for the 996. Any more and the 'bang for the buck' value was too little.
Thus, for me to get this across the line the 996 has to be cheaper and I get about 14K for the Boxster.

Re: Went to see a 996 which did not go to plan...
Assuming WBAC is the benchmark for 'bottom book' have just entered an imaginary 996 similar to the one I looked at.
Value given is just below £10K.
Many 996's on PH are £17K, private and trade.
Noticeable how many C4S's there are for sale at mid £25K

C4S's have dropped a bit. Friend of mine had one. Lovely car. But very harsh over rubbish British roads. Loud inside with tyre noise. One for the Sunday blasts, not so much for a regular user in my view. Or maybe I am getting old.
