Steering Rack Rebuild Kits

We have spent a little time developing a relatively comprehensive repair kit for all of the racks fitted to early 911s.

The most difficult problem to solve concerned the rack support bushes which comprised of a steel backed bi-metallic bush bonded into rubber housing.

We manufactured a few of these bushes and discovered that the vulcanising process caused the steel backed bush to expand and cause problems with clearances.

This could have been avoided using expensive tooling but the costs involved were very high so we had to find an alternative method.

We have now used a Phosphor- Bronze wrapped bush which is then press fitted into an anodised aluminium housing and this method provides excellent control of clearance and tolerance.

The bush has a flange which allows the bush to be retained in the rack body using the standard hardware that retains the original bush.

The aluminium housing also incorporates a pair of Viton O Rings to provide a degree of vibration isolation.

The Phosphor Bronze bush is a material with excellent load bearing and wear characteristics and also incorporates grease pockets to ensure good lubrication.

Each kit is supplied with the parts needed for a complete overhaul, including fasteners, oil seal deep groove ball bearings, gaskets, sealants and LiquiMoly ML47 grease.

The Delrin Faced Support pad which commonly wears is also supplied.

The contents of individual kits varies slightly depending on the rack type.

4 kits are available.

Kit 1 - 1965-1968 £175.00

Kit 2 - 1969 (one year only) £175

Kit 3 - 914 £175

Kit 4 - 1970-1989 includes Full Complement Needle Roller Pinion Bearing and Seeger-Orbis Retaining Rings. £195.00

We can also provide a full rebuild service if required.
