68 rhd Bay Window camper value?

I might be in a position to have a real motd etc camper bay window to buy.
It runs, needs some tidy work and has empi wheels. I know the history and the owner.
It is not a super straight example, but usable and should be affordable.
What is the market value?
The vehicle is in the cars for sale section with pics, for sale at 20k which seems just tooooo much.
Anyone who can guide me please?
Thanks, Graham.

View it like an early 911."A bit untidy" means totally rotted out.I sold a lovely restored example last year, for £14k.I know it was lovely because I spent 2 months welding and painting it.

A friend of mine is selling a very nice rhd bay for £15.5k, needs nothing but driving. I haven’t seen the £20k one but that does sound like very strong money for a ‘useable’ example.

Interesting, I know it has been welded and then some most of last year, and I rebuilt the front suspension!
However, the panel fit is wanting and it has been painted with rollers and coach paint, better looking than it sounds, but drab colours.
Lots of new exterior panels and a nice modern interior with some mod cons.
Your comments help, thank you.

£12-15k? Hard to say without pictures... message me some if you want a more considered opinion!

'68 is fairly early though so may be likely to attract a premium.

Cheers,

Ollie

Thank you Ollie, will do when back home, only have the iPad right now.
The pics are in the private for sale section, posted about 2 months ago.

The van is a 'rare', transition model in rhd, I know nothing about these but it is very early 68.
I think the air grille by the back side windows are different?

Seems 12 to 13 for a running early bay window with some useable mod cons and a pop up roof and rust free to pass an MoT is about right, but not 20k...

Maybe it will sell in the summer.

.
Since it belongs to your son-in-law, why not ask him how come he feels it's worth £20k when there appear to be others in similar condition around for £15k ?

Did that before the van went up for sale.
It needed to sell for that to meet house buying finances.
There is an element of not really wanting to sell it, he has had it for 16 years, been over Europe in it and Le Mans several times, he is attached to it, something I fully understand.
So, a bit of overpricing, over value, wishful hoping.

As ever, he has seen others at VW festivals priced this way prob by other hopefuls.

I would like to think my old 911 is worth X but reality would be X/2....if anyone could be tempted.

Strikes me there are a lot of old buses in the UK now, some dog rough and a few superbly restored magazine article vehicles, but a lot of them and many want a split screen only.

Hi Graham,

Prices of campers have dropped quite a bit in the last few years, they are a bit less trendy than they were. A 68 RHD Bay is fairly rare but that doesn't necessarily equate to valuable as the most people are after the slightly later early bays with discs etc. In terms of value original Westfalias etc tend to hold their money better.

At the moment unless there is something more about it it is between £10k and £13k for scruffy, as good ones seem to be starting at that

Cheers

Roger

My friend has a 68 early bay, fully restored, its worth about £16k, but it is immaculate. i would say nearer £12k is more realistic. However knowing it and how its been looked after could be worth a bit of a premium to you.

Thank you both, this all helps considerably.
He wants to sell it to raise cash, but lack of stopping in modern world traffic is a big worry, so I understand the desire for discs and servo conversion.

Cross over model. Bay front screen and smaller rear lenses make it a nice bus. Agree with values above. Our works 67 split which is solid was £15k

Yes, that's the one.
Always fancied one myself until I looked into the mods I would need to do, brakes, suspension and steering to make it easy to survive on today's roads...Just Kampers...decided it is not worth it.

We shall see what he does over the summer, but I'll pass on everyone's thoughts to lower his expectations.
He may be able to raise the money another way, and than keep his bus. :)
And add some discs and a servo!
