Wow! Quality work, that's some serious panel repair you're doing - it looks fantastic. Looking forward to seeing this one progress....

Thanks

If I were to do this repair again, I'd put the top join higher up by an inch

I’m going all the way up and over to the parcel shelf, just trying to work out where to put the bottom joint!

Is it best to cut up to a radius already there?
Run the welds along that radius where the panel is most ridged?

Strikes me you need to be a master of the grinder as much as the welder in this stuff!

One piece of accurate banter I received as an apprentice was 'as a welder you make a good grinder' I think he was trying to tell me something!

Good metal finishing is just as important as good welding imo, no point being a great welder if you can't straighten things up after welding.

With your panel Gary I'd weld it an inch above the bottom fold line, so you've got enough room to get a dolly in the back, but you'll need a helper for that unless you got octopus like arms

This is the other panel I made for the rear bulkhead

I left a long tail on the repair panel so I could choose the joint later. It’s either going to be right in the middle as you describe or 5mm below the joggle where the line of spot welds to the parcel shelf are. The thought on that area being that the stiffness of the joggle will help reduce the distortion in the first place

Keep posting your repairs, really interesting to see a variety of different approaches.

Seems like I've got a hosting issue at the moment, but will try to resolve it.

As you can see the engine slam panel is a bit too lacey to fill up with mig!! and rest of the cross member is really good, so instead of total replacement I thought I'd have shot at making the top panel....

Image[

Made some tooling to press the indents in & marked up the fold & trim lines

Image[

Then trim & tip returns
Image[

Cut rusty piece out , clean & prime inside crossmember
Image[

Trimmed & test fitting of outer panel prior to welding
Image[

A shot of the underside tacked into place

Image[r

Seam welded & cleaned up
Image

And the top welded in

So onto another head scratcher of a panel, the engine lid...
