Luftgekühlt !

Post by mycar »

Looks like this is coming to the UK, which means that sooner or later I'll need to know how to pronounce it.

Up till now, whenever I've spotted it coming up in a sentence, I've started reading more quickly so I can get past it without pronouncing it in my head.

It has become the L word.

So how do you pronounce Luftgekühlt ?..... there's less than a month to practice.

Seems mostly to be referred to as “Luft” = much easier!

.

OK - my explanation ...

Luft ... the 'u' is pronounced like the 'oo' in 'look'

ge ... pronounced like 'get' without the 't'

kühlt ... the ('ü') is prounced like the 'ou' in 'could'

Pedants Corner. Not sure that the first bit is correct. It is a relatively hard "u" sound as there is no 'umlaut' over the "u". Your illustration of the sound of the "u" in kuhlt seems about right where the umlaut softens and lengthens the vowel sound.

Pretty sure its pronounced:

Luftgerkhunt

3 syllables. Easier to remember that way.

Three syllables is what Andy illustrated. But definately no "ger" and no "hunt" either.
