Got the car back on the road after 4 years with gauges fitted which I thought had been re-stored. However, after two miles the odometer and trip meter stop working although the speedo still functions. Took the outer ring off and got to the mechanism and it looks like someone has been in there recently and applied some grease. The metal and plastic gears all look in good condition. The odometer tumbler felt stiff and wouldn't turn, likewise the trip. After a little gentle movement by hand I think I've freed up the tumblers. Can anyone suggest how to gently lubricate the tumblers so I don't get rusty fluid over the face or numbers and what lubricant to use. I don't feel I've done much so don't want to just re-fit to the car in case it seizes again shortly. The outer ring won't take too much re-crimping. I suppose I could send it to a gauge restorer??

It's actually pretty easy to dismantle the whole thing to clean it all up. A common problem is the little plastic gear slipping on the shaft (it's a press fit) – just roughen up the shaft with a small file and push the gear back on.

Hi Keith - thanks for that.. very useful. However, having read it a couple of times I still can't quite see how to remove the faceplate without disturbing the needle? I don't want to have to get it recalibrated.

The needle/pointer has to be removed I'm afraid - then it's just a case of undoing the 2 small screws which hold the dial in place.

The needle is under a little spring tension to hold it against the stop at 0mph. Just gently bend the tip of the needle over the stop and let it settle to it’s true resting spot. Mark this position on the back of the dial face. Shld give you a near as damit accurate as was when you come to put it all back together.
