Next I needed to machine the mirror Bowl sections I'd spun in Stainless steel to accept the 997 Mirror Motor units, first starting with cutting out for the wiring grommet

Then taking the 997 cast mount bracket and cutting them carefully down to fit inside each bowl
bowl2.JPG
Then setting up dead centre & drilling out to mount with rubber shock washers & stainless M3 bolts & nylocks

The motor assemblies were then fitted paying attention to handing and up & down so that the control in the car would match the original mirror movement (left is left, up is up etc)

After a functional powered up check, the bowls were finally mounted to the cones with 8mm stainless stud bar links

Next I commission a specialist Mirror company to make the new glasses, then while they were being made I stripped the mounts from the original 997 glass (held on with tough double sided) & cleaned them up.

The then needed re-shaping to support the new circular mirror glass

These parts needed to be re-used as they locate & clip onto the motor assemblies

I collected the mirror glass from the manufacturer last month. They'd done a superb job. After a lot of information change & getting a Font licence (yes there is such a thing) for the Porsche script font, I had "21st Century Outlaw) lasered into them. This burns off just the silvering from the back of the glass and is obviously permanent. I opted not to back light, but painted in from reverse in Martini red to match my side stripes & numberplate footer branding 8)

The glass was also tinted & the convex curve of the original 997 replicated to the degree, thus ensuring correct field of view!

Finally I made a quick template to align the script exactly across the bottom when fitted, and attached to my cut down 997 mounting plates

So, after 18 months in the making all that was left to do was fit to the car :)

I took off the original mirrors & cleaned the rubber base plates

Then fitted & tested my new replacements

So its quite amazing how big the 911 has grown to be a 997 & the mirrors had to do the same to look in proportion
glass13.JPG
So here is the original 70's bullet against my new 997 Outlaw mirrors as an example

That works!
Any thoughts on a '73' look change for the front? (now there's a challenge)

Aha, yes. that's already on the cards. I purchased a used 997 front bumper at the same time as the rear last year to cut up & use as a base-guide in the same way as I did the rear
It's funny now the projects underway, the rear just looks retro Outlaw "right" to me, which makes the front end look a little "lost" at the moment
Ducktail next as that's low hanging fruit :)

Forgot to add images of the glass in place

That really is exceptional. Fantastic work, amazing commitment and brilliant skills - well done!

I have no doubt this will become a bit of a poster-car for the hard core newer generation Porsche owners....catalyzing/facilitating a linking back to the DDK era cars for those of them that have been solely modern car biased!

Cheers

Thanks for all the kind words, it is much appreciated :)

I'd hoped to get further on this year but all of my spare time outside of work has been taken up by another project.

A project I can now share with fellow DDKr's

I have been working with my good friend Ant Anstead on a few projects since helping out on his "For the Love of Cars" TV show.
I am privileged to tell you that I am part of a fantastic team of 7 highly skilled guys at Dowsetts Classic Cars ltd who are totally passionate about cars.

We have built a complete car from scratch using traditional skills in only 18 months that we think captures the golden era of the classic car. Incorporating all the things we love. Whilst you may see echo's of many things in our car, it is it's own car, a fresh brand new classic.
The car passed IVA last week & is a fully functioning road legal vehicle.
It far surpasses a prototype & is finished to the highest level. We did have a mock up on show earlier this year, but this is the real deal.

We are unveiling the car at the NEC this weekend, where I'll be manning the stand. Please. please feel free to come and chat.

But for now here's a sneak preview!
